What goes with deep teal?

We have a Victorian fireplace in the study. It has tiles down each side, which I don’t think are original, but the fireplace woul have to be taken out for the tiles to be replaced. This is a bit too pricey for us to do, so we will keep the tiles as they are.

They are plain, no pattern, in a deep teal. Nothing especially attractive, and not what I’d choose, but there we are. Fireplace itself is black. The carpet is a beige neutral.

We will be buying dotted furniture for the study, probably in a painted finish.

What colours would go well with this please? Room is north facing, and pretty dark despite us replacing the sash window and making the window taller.

Ideally, a deep orange is your best bet. Then maybe introduce a teal that’s a couple of shade lighter as an accent.

Similar to this. It’s a beautiful combination.

Interesting! I entirely accept what you’re saying, but orange isn’t for me. I am open to other suggestions, I promise.

It’s good to see, but it’s really not for me, much as I objectively accept that it looks good.

Sunflower yellow.

We’ve had teal and a dusky pink before in a north facing room, the pink warmed things up.

Dodie66 · 31/01/2021 20:36

I have deap teal cushions and rust coloured carpet snd curtains that go well together

Mustardbay · 31/01/2021 20:37

Lime green, mustard, aqua?

titchy · 31/01/2021 20:37

Bright pink or bright purple.

Grey, silver, lilac, purple, some shades of blue possibly.

The orange is interesting. Looks better than I'd have expected.

Depends how much contrast vs complement you want really.

If you paint colour swatches onto lining paper then you can move them around the room to see how they're affected by the light in different places of the room.

Loads of colours go with Teal, we have teal carpet in a room with grey walls, or teal walls with a slate coloured floor.

In a past house DH had teal with oatmeal, but I love it with brighter colours, so yellow, orange as suggested above!

WellTidy · 31/01/2021 20:57

This is really interesting, thank you. How would I use these colours in a study though, do you think? No room for sofas/armchair, wouldn’t have any need for cushions. The only soft furnishing we’d have is a Roman blind on the window (window is directly opposite the fireplace).

We are going to have built in furniture in there in a painted finish, but unlikely to go with a colour for this - more likely white or a neutral, for longevity.

We use it everyday at the moment, we have everything you’d expect for home working - massive printer, pc, big monitor, lots of files and textbooks and stationery.

Do you have a photo? (Or a diagram of the layout?)

What's the flooring or are you going to replace it too?

WellTidy · 31/01/2021 21:12

We are replacing flooring, with a light beige carpet.

Mustard would look good. A rug?

JaninaDuszejko · 31/01/2021 21:25

Teal and orange would give me a headache! A very light pink would be a good neutral for the walls. I'd probably have teal in the blind at the window and possible a teal lamp or vase somewhere.

muddledmidget · 31/01/2021 21:36

I think I would keep the teal colour for the tiles and a matching roman blind, and go for a very pale creamy white on the walls for a study. I'd need it to be calming, with white wood furniture and lots of green plants around, I might pick up the teal in some photo frames on the wall and a lamp, but I can't think I'd want any darker colours even in a North facing room, for a living room or dining room they'd be fine, but a study needs to promote a clear uncluttered head for me

mustbebetter · 31/01/2021 21:39

mustard and hot pink!!!!

fizznchips · 31/01/2021 21:46

Fuchsia pink would look great, my bedroom is teal & pink

CommanderBurnham · 31/01/2021 21:47

I'm not a fan of teal. Is it obvious? If so just go for a kind of curated boho feel with a few pinks, yellows and purples and neutrals. It's a really difficult colour. Personally I'd ignore it and do what you want with the room.

CommanderBurnham · 31/01/2021 21:48

Could you paint them?

TheSpottedZebra · 31/01/2021 21:50

Mustard or dusky pink. Very now, so may not have much longevity.
So if you don't want that ( as it will therefore 'date' quickly), choose something else.

There are many ways to create colour palettes -

complementary is only one option,,,

Here’s a split-complementary palette from the Blue-Green, Red-Purple and Green-Yellow Hue Families.
