What goes with deep teal?

We have a Victorian fireplace in the study. It has tiles down each side, which I don’t think are original, but the fireplace woul have to be taken out for the tiles to be replaced. This is a bit too pricey for us to do, so we will keep the tiles as they are.

They are plain, no pattern, in a deep teal. Nothing especially attractive, and not what I’d choose, but there we are. Fireplace itself is black. The carpet is a beige neutral.

We will be buying dotted furniture for the study, probably in a painted finish.

What colours would go well with this please? Room is north facing, and pretty dark despite us replacing the sash window and making the window taller.

If you are looking for a neutral to go with teal then I think taupe goes well.

For more teal - this designer uses lots of teal in her furniture, furnishings, fabrics, wallpaper etc.

Boring, but teal and brilliant white looks bright and modern.

Sendingasurprise · 31/01/2021 22:20

Lime, grey, navy.....a really dull purple?

Sendingasurprise · 31/01/2021 22:21

Excellent band name there, if I do say myself! Ooh, and mustard!

itsgettingweird · 31/01/2021 22:34

I have teal with dusty pink and some charcoal grey.

Porridgeoat · 31/01/2021 22:42

I’d probably work with colours closer on the colour wheel - a mix of different bluey greens, greeny yellows

clevername · 31/01/2021 22:42

Teal, mustard and red is my fave colour combo atm - it doesn't sound like it would work but it really, really does.

Crazzzycat · 31/01/2021 22:44

It sounds like you don’t want to draw too much attention to the teal tiles? If that’s the case, I wouldn’t go for colours that are completely different, like orange, mustard, or pink, as those will make the teal stand out. If you use colours like blue, grey and other more neutral colours, the teal tiles will blend in more.

mustbebetter · 31/01/2021 23:12

teal is really dark so you need something zingy and bright next to it. Yellow is perfect and will shine. Not acid yellow but something more like sunshine, mustard, happy sunny yellow. And a bit of gold in terms of accessories, works great with teal.

I’m doing my room dark teal this year and can’t decide between orange or mustard/gold. I figure if I’m going dramatic I may as well go for it!

Copper goes well with teal. We have teal/copper/oak/grey in our living room. It's not quite so bright as orange but tones well.

Crazybirdlady · 01/02/2021 00:57

I think you can get tile paint? If I didn't like them I wouldn't be decorating a room around them

caringcarer · 01/02/2021 01:01

I would think the teal is the splash of vibrant colour and add a rich chocolate brown with it especially for furniture as won't show the dirt as much as a light colour.

Pizzafortwo · 01/02/2021 01:32

Teal is a bold statement colour. According to my colour course if you pair with other dark neutrals, grey, navy etc. you accentuate this, also if you put it with red/purple which are also bold then you also accentuate it.

Warmer greys and ranges of browns will soften the teal, and you can freshen the look with lighter colours e.g. soft peach/pink/sand, cream, . Pops of brighter pink would add a less heavy look, but that could be a bunch of flowers or on cushions.

Beige and olive would also work with some orange or pink accents.

Don’t forget you can get near neutrals including blacks, whites, greys from every Hue Family - not just the bold and more saturated colours,,

I have a teal couch and have accessories in navy, mustard and yellow.

Pizzafortwo · 01/02/2021 07:59

@colette100 where do you get those graphs?

lovelemoncurd · 01/02/2021 08:01

Orange

ThelmaNotLouise · 01/02/2021 08:16

Pale pink walls might off-set the teal well.

We have teal and brown and navy with some egg shell works very well and it very period.

In another room I have blue and yellow but teal also works with yellow.

LemonViolet · 01/02/2021 09:58

@Pizzafortwo what colour course was that?

@colette100 also wondering about those charts!

I think teal is an incredibly versa-tile Wink colour. But I think if you wanted to blend it out I’d be choosing a black/charcoal/aqua/sky/pale blue palette so it just fit in the middle of all that somewhere. I’m planning a teal living room and looking at all contrasting colours for everything else - navy, orange, purple, yellow, pink - for a more is more colourbomb approach!

The harmony charts above are generated at The Land of Color .com by the amazing Lori Sawaya.

There is a very new Colour Forum on her website - you will find some of the articles quite an eye opener on colour in the home!

They deal with objective, measurable attributes of paint colours -
not personally subjective ‘undertones’.

(You can compare colours in great detail using the Colorographies)

Their Instagram/Pinterest/Youtube pages have lots of useful colour tips you won’t find anywhere else,,,

I create colour palettes via this method.

Thank you all. You’ve given me loads to think about. It’s a pretty full, hard working study/office, and I think I’m going to go with muddled’a view that uncluttered and simple are probably the way to go. I may well be boring and just pick out a blind fabric with teal in it (something geometric maybe) and go with painted white furniture, creamy walls, and then pick out the teal in mounts or picture frames.

If it was a living room, or dining room, I think I would be holder and go with peacock colours or yellow.

But I am liking the teal more than I was!

I think I'm going to go with this Romo fabric for a Roman blind and something warm on the walls like F&B Joa's White, and then painted white fitted office furniture. More boring than most of the suggestions, I know, but I think it would be conducive to working all day in the study.
