Living room layout

Thanks to those who replied to my last post (complete with dodgy hand-sketched floor plan Grin) . There were some fab ideas but nothing seemed to jump out so have been trawling the web for ideas and came across this image which is pretty much identical layout. I get that this is staged to sell and does look very chic but what a waste of a room if we're all cramped up me end.

We are starting from scratch and ideally want:
2.5-3 seater sofa
2 seater sofa + armchair OR 2 armchairs
large coffee table
Somewhere for the tv that is comfortable to regularly all watch

Any suggestions for what goes where in this room?

I didn't see your previous thread, but this doesn't seem too cramped to me? Is your door in the same place? Major no-no (IME) is the TV, you really want that at eye level or below.

The logical move would be big sofa on wall next to door, smaller one under window, armchair where it is in the pic. TV lower down/to one side.

If you had the sofa facing the window you would cut off flow to the rest of the room. In all honesty there are only so many ways to lay out a living room, the most important thing is that it's easy to love with, which this one looks to me. If the seating is too spaced out it becomes less relaxing, you lose any intimacy.

Can you link your other thread OP?
I don’t really know without knowing what the other half of the room is (the corner where the photo is taken from) but that doesn’t look cramped at all, it looks like they’ve zoned one end as the tv/sitting area and the other as maybe a workspace? Or is it a walkthrough area?

houseyhousey · 31/01/2021 08:44

Previous thread link below but it is a self-constrained rectangular room so not a walk-through and really wanting to use the whole space as a sitting room IYKWIM.

Not exactly the same placement of windows & doors but these options could work

We have this exact layout and have struggled over the years. Our TV is in the same position as the one in your picture but is off centre as it sits above the fireplace which was already there. To make it worse when we moved in we had double doors opposite the window which we eventually blocked off. We have tried the sofas opposite but it blocked the space in a nice bay window and the double doors opposite. Tv watching was awkward. We have also tried a corner sofa to the right of the door. That didn't work as the room looked unbalanced. Our solution was this

  • 2 seater sofa to the left of the door as you come through.
  • A footstool in the window.
- Sideboard opposite the sofa to the left of fireplace/tv with all tv boxes in.
  • To the right of the door we have a 1.5 large armchair angled diagonally towards the centre and
  • in the far right corner a smaller reading armchair again angled to the centre of the room but with no tv view.
  • a small lamp table between the reading chair and large armchair and a large coffee table on a rug in the centre.

I think this works really well and is the only solution we have actually liked and been comfy with in the 22 years we have lived here. I will do a diagram later if you think it would be helpful.

Mumski45 · 31/01/2021 09:34

Out of interest is you room as big as the one in the picture looks. I think ours may be a bit smaller. My layout may not work in a large room as everything would be too far away.

LemonViolet · 31/01/2021 10:03

Is there any focal point in your room opposite the doors then?

Assuming not, I think I’d consider having the tv on the same wall as the doors, so on one side of the doors (your right as you come in, away from the window) a sideboard/media unit housing the tv and accoutrements. A corner/chaise sofa directly opposite the media unit, a tall bookcase next to that opposite the doors, then 2 further seats the other end of the room either side of the window, both angled towards the centre, with a coffee table inbetween. I’d have these as 1.5 seaters/snuggle chairs depending on the width of the room. Lamps and plants around as desired. Perhaps more low bookcases around edges of the room if there is space, if you are book people! Big rug in the middle the room to tie it all together, but perhaps an oval one rather than rectangular to soften the boxiness. That way the window end is more focused on reading/sitting/conversation and the end away from the window is more tv watching, but the whole space works socially when needed as well, one of the conversation chairs also faces the tv. The tv wouldn’t be in your face when you walk in, your attention would be drawn more to the window conversation area I think.

@NatashaAlianovaRomanova my first thought was your first picture but don't really like the idea of walking in to the back of a sofa.

@Mumski45 & @LemonViolet I'm trying to work out both suggestions on paper and not sure I'm getting it - any chance of a v.basic sketch? And yes our room is similar size possibly slightly smaller than the picture I think from memory it's something like 19ftx12.5ft

@NatashaAlianovaRomanova where do you do the room layout - is there a good app I could try the same?

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 31/01/2021 11:55

@houseyhousey I found them on Pinterest - just search living room or lounge floor plan

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 31/01/2021 11:59

This one wouldn't have the doors opening onto the back of the sofa

Not sure if this will come up very well. Happy to PM you some photos but don't want them attached to my user name.

Those measurements sound similar to mine. I don't think you have enough width for some of the suggested layouts especially as you say you would be walking into the back of a sofa.

Mumski45 · 31/01/2021 12:39

Just based on a quick rough measure mine is 12.5ft by 17.5ft including the bay so pretty much the same. The only thing that may be different is the positioning of the door. Ours is slightly off centre so there is room for a small 2 seat sofa on left of door but not on the right.

LemonViolet · 31/01/2021 12:49

Terrible scale and am uncertain of dimensions but general gist (think there’d be a lot less open space by the sounds of things!!)
