I'm planning on painting a bedroom and ensuite that are currently an inherited aqua blue paradise! The ceilings are low ish and the bathroom has wooden panelling to dado height. I'm thinking of Dulux Egyptian Cotton on the ceiling, Natural Calico on the walls and a darker colour on the bathroom panelling - any other ideas and especially for the bathroom panelling gratefully received. The skirtings, architrave and doors will be Timeless.

We've got an unopened tin of Almond White so that's favourite for the ceilings.

What do you have already in the way of artwork, bedding, cushions, rugs etc that you could pick a colour from to pick out?
If you have a sage green rug, for example, use a sage green.

There's not much really as it's a spare room. Just a sea of aqua. I really want a neutral background for anything we dress the room with.

They have a visualiser app on their website.

I've got it on my phone - I'm just lacking inspiration, partly down to the miserable situation and weather I think. I might go with navy for bathroom vanity unit and bath panel. I don't know - I want light, but restful. And no bloody aqua.

Why not have the panelling navy? That would be lovely. We have a dark grey on our panelling and it really works. I say navy as last year I painted DC3 bedroom walls navy and I love it.

wowfudge · 20/01/2021 10:49

That's an idea - the bathroom is t&g panelled all the way round to dado rail height and the bath and vanity unit are panelled in the same style. It could be too much to do the lot - it's in an attic with a velux window at one end.

Hmmm...if you also have bath panel and vanity it might be too much with all the navy. But maybe not if you have lots of white/ Egyptian cotton/ other neutral on floor/ walls/ tiles? Alternatively you could do the bath panel and vanity in the same neutral as the walls? Egyptian cotton would be nice. I've recently got really into doing the skirting and doors in rooms the same as the walls and it really makes a big difference - something to consider?

loubieloo4 · 21/01/2021 02:18

I know people thinks it's been overdone, however, we have wood panelling to half height on our hall, stairs and landing. We didn't really want to payout or deal with the mess of removing it. So we painted the wood in a dark grey using a silk emulsion after many tester pots (it's harder to scratch off unbelievably!) and wallpapered above. I love it. I did consider navy too but fell in love with the wallpaper that matched they grey.

wowfudge · 21/01/2021 07:55

I'm not going to do the doors and skirtings the same colour as the walls - that's what it has at the moment. All in aqua, with aqua carpet! There are white tiles round the bath and the shower's over the bath. I'm not a grey fan at all.

I am considering painting the wooden panelling a neutral shade and going navy on the bath panelling and the vanity unit. I am also thinking of wallpapering above the dado in the bathroom. Not sure I can bear stripping the painted paper that's already though.

A combination of navy wood and neutral sounds ideal. It'll make a huge difference. Wallpaper sounds lovely with the navy. I went with a patterned tiled floor instead, which I love, but definitely doing wallpaper in downstairs bathroom when I get round to that room. Next door neighbour has just created a small loo downstairs and the wallpaper is so impactful in such a wee room.

oohmama · 21/01/2021 10:55

Egyptian cotton and denim drift go beautifully together!!!

wowfudge · 21/01/2021 13:35

I've tested Egyptian Cotton this morning. It looks grey on our walls and quite cold - the window of the bedroom faces NNE so the room needs a bit more warmth. Also Denim Drift was distinctly purple when I tried it in another bedroom, but I do have a tester somewhere so can try it in the attic room.

Puffalicious the flooring is a mid tone Karndean wood effect so it'll go with pretty much anything. I might save wallpaper for the main bathroom which we're planning on having redone this year.

The wood toned floor will warm everything up and go beautifully with navy. I used Sapphire Salute on DS walls and it's lovely and rich- quite dark but I like that and a true navy not purple at all.

Puffalicious · 21/01/2021 13:55

My sister has just used Natural Hessian in a room with cold light and said it's worked really well to warm it up but still stayed neutral. Haven't seen it due to Covid.

Many also purporting taupe to be THE new neutral.

Lovely combination colette

wowfudge · 22/01/2021 08:12

It is, but I prefer Dulux trade paints as painter-in-chief of the household.

I tried Sapphire Salute with the Visualiser yesterday so it's good to hear it's a true navy. I'd like to get this room painted before we have the main bathroom redone as we'll need to use the ensuite instead and it's just blurgh at the moment!

If taupe is the new neutral I've been ahead of the curve for years Grin

Let us know how the Sapphire Salute goes OP. What did you try it with on the visualiser?

wowfudge · 22/01/2021 21:18

Natural Hessian. Trying to persuade DP we need to sort out the bloody cupboard doors in the there - I don't want to paint them all as they don't shut properly and I'd like to have sliding doors instead. Ho hum.

OP posts:
Puffalicious · 23/01/2021 18:46

Might it save you a lot of hassle if you pop them off and plane them a bit before painting? OR mention that this is necessary and if OH can't be doing with the hassle he might decide the sliding doors are his idea. ( I have form for this kind of gentle manipulation!).

Sapphire Salute and Natural Hessian sounds perfect.

wowfudge · 23/01/2021 20:57

Possibly. They're also not very attractive. We need to have a door fitted to the bathroom so I'm hoping we can get a builder/joiner to do that and the sliding doors.

OP posts:
Puffalicious · 23/01/2021 21:14

Perfect idea then, builders can do both at same time. I really think this will be a winning combination of navy and natural- the floor will blend beautifully. Then you can indulge in few new towels/ accessories. Photos please!

wowfudge · 24/01/2021 10:21

We have a programme of works imagined for this year. Hopefully at least some of them with come to fruition. If I can take photos which aren't too identifying I will do - the house is a one off and if you've seen inside it you'd definitely recognise much of it.
