Blinds vs shutters

I like the look of shutters but my flat is tiny and I think they will look too bulky.

However, blinds often look cheap and flimsy and break easily..... I’d there something in the middle? Or a really good quality blind that looks smart and works well?

Thanks Mumsnetters. X

I have Luxaflex Duette shades and never had any problems with them breaking. We’ve had them for more than 5 years and they still look like new.

I would go for wooden Venetian blinds - you can get thicker slatted ones, which give the same effect as shutters but would be much cheaper

I have shutters - they look lovely

I had venitian blinds fitted all over my last house. The kind a PP suggests with thick wooden slats.

Worse thing I ever did, cleaning them was a nightmare. The tapes that hold them together gather the dust and dirt too.

We went for white Venetian blinds (narrow slats) instead of shutters as we have shallow window recess / sills (sash windows) and shutters would have been too bulky and in the way when open. We got them made to measure online from Blinds to Go and have been really pleased, they were easy to fit, fitted perfectly, work smoothly and don't seem to attract dirt and dust at all. Maybe that's because we open/shut/adjust them all the time so it doesn't settle.

Shutters aren’t practical for our windows so we have Venetians blinds with wide 50mm slats instead. Don’t get tapes - they get very grubby.

Thank you all! Some brilliant suggestions for me to get started with my research!

I have shutters as well (in a small room) and love them! We used a company called 'shutterlab'
They were absolutely brilliant. Great service from start to finish, and by far the cheapest quote (and I shopped around alot) Highly recommended!

I think it depends on the room, really. Shutters can look lovely in the right setting. Personally I like blinds and curtains though, because I love fabrics and think they soften a room and make it feel cosy and welcoming.

As for blinds looking cheap, there are cheap blinds and there are quality ones. I’ve had mine made to measure in quality fabric by a skilled specialist, and they look beautiful.
