I’m really stuck on art work for new home. I’ve been looking for original oil paintings that are modern but open to any types really - what advice does anyone have on what works well in a living room.

Any pictures of your art work would be appreciated or names of recommended artists or web pages.

Thank you!

A couple of my artworks in my lounge, quite different styles. One is a mixed media original (bought from a local gallery but sadly unsigned and I cannot remember the artist name) and the second is a limited edition print by Bob Barker.

It may be useful if you’re looking for a modern original to search for websites selling art from graduate exhibitions.

Over the years I've picked up quite a lot of different styles of art.

This is a great opportunity to consider investing rather than just buying generic ‘art’. My partner is a art dealer - I’d recommend looking at buying modern British (modern refers to anything before 1950...) do some research and look at auction. Honestly you may actually be able to the resell later down the line. It’s the ‘up and coming’ collectable field.

Crazzzycat · 14/01/2021 13:52

My advice is probably not that helpful, but I’d go for something you really love or that means something to you.

I have a combination of generic art, artworks bought from galleries and a few works I commissioned. They’re all different styles, but that doesn’t really matter as I love them all. So, to my eyes at least, they all look good together!

We got quite a few framed pictures from King and McGaw, they have a big selection.

I bought my first pictures from small galleries in St Ives, Bath and London. I went to the annual Art Fair at Business Design Centre in Islington quite frequently and worked out which galleries I liked. There are Art fairs quite frequently like the Affordable Art Fair and ING show - now online which bring together a broad range of artists and galleries.

We also have a local art festival near where I live where all the artists do open house to show their work. It's quite fun to go from house to house to look at their work. My last two pictures - an etching and screen print were in the RA Summer Exhibition in 2019 but I contacted the artists directly so that I could buy them more cheaply - one I'd seen in his house in the local festival. The creator of the etching taught on my daughters Art foundation course. So I feel I have connections with both.

My tastes have changed over the years but they have long associations and resonance with me and the family. So when I move house shortly (cross fingers) the picture that has always hung by the dining table will be hung next to it again in the new house - since its what symbolises being in our home at our table, if that makes sense. So the pictures will make the new house feel like home again.

I’m a big fan of arty tea towels framed in a print. Looks lovely and unbelievably cheap

I would also recommend the Art Fairs. I bought one for my son’s 40 th birthday and just purchased one for Christmas for DS2 from the same artist. I saw a lot of good work and a great variety at the Hepworth Gallery Print Festival in Wakefield and the Ulverston Art Festival.

We have some inherited work in the sitting room which is increasing in value especially if I sold it in America. However I like them and they are part of the history of my family. My sister has some too.

I go to a lot of small exhibitions too and have bought some or have been given them( DH) so I would recommend that you look at small galleries. Etsy is another place you might like to look. Not feasible at the moment but end of year shows at Art colleges and Uni.
My daughter is an artist and there was some fantastic talent in her year group.

What type of work are you looking for or are you not sure yet?
