Painted line instead of picture rail

Had anyone ever just masking taped a straight line where a picture rail would go instead of actually having the wood to separate the 2 colours?
If so how did it work out?

I think trying to mask and paint a totally straight line would be such a headache - I looked at doing it for a painted stair runner and was put off as it looked like it doesn't always come out cleanly so lots of tidying up with a VERY steady hand...
Also, a picture rail has a purpose, & I love easily being able to hang or change position of my pictures. I even used it to hang (lightly filled) stockings on the chimney breast this year.
If you are set on it, try searching Instagram for examples, that's usually my go to.

Yes, I have this, it looks good. I found it really easy to paint a straight line, with the the help of masking tape.
