SuperKingsize Bed and Headbiard

We need a new bed - ours is about 12 years old now. It's a Kingsize - and I am seriously considering a Superking. Those who have one - would give me your views please? I think my ideal would be two mattresses rather than one (husband with twitchy restless legs and I am a light sleeper) but I suppose I would have to just go for a superking.
Are there decent bedding sets available?
I also looked at headboards and was surprised that there didn't seem to be many metal ones, only padded. I like a metal one so not sure if they are classed as old hat now.

I have an emperor. Emperors vary widely in sizes - length and width - there doesn’t seem to be a standard emperor size. Mine is 200cm wide. I bought duvet, longer pillows and all bedding from The Duvet Store. You might have more choice there in super king.

I can’t remember where I got the headboard from, sorry, but it was probably the same place as we bought the bed (a divan with drawers). We have an upholstered headboard, which I really like as I sit up in bed a lot and i always find that I can feel the bars of metal ones even through two pillows.

I love love love love love love love my super king
Honestly can't understand why everyone doesn't have one
They're amazing

WhatTheFoot · 03/01/2021 00:41

We bought a super king when we moved house a year ago...it's amazing, honestly don't know how we managed in a double. I get bedding from Dunelm, I think all of their bedding ranges go up to super king and they wash really well.

Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly · 03/01/2021 00:43

@WellTidy Oooh I never thought about the padded headboard - you're right in that the metal is annoying when sitting reading. Good point.
@Icdododo, I am sure I would love one too. Just have to persuade DH to spend the money. Maybe I will look at bedding choices now for a while before going to bed.

Oh and my favourite bedding set is just a cheap £20 one from amazon. It's lovely

WellTidy · 03/01/2021 08:31

Our bed and headboard were from The Big Bed Company.

FippertyGibbett · 03/01/2021 08:35

I love my super king and wouldn’t have anything else.
I don’t have a problem getting bedding from Next and Dunelm, and love my velour headboard from Next.
We currently have one mattress, but would probably have two singles next time and keep the base. Would I use two single sheets or can I still use my SK ?

You can still use SK

Superking is definitely the way to go! Our is cream panted wood with a high headboard as well as a footboard.
They're fab, you can spread out and not be to close to each otherGrin
Our mattress is really deep and John Lewis is the best place to buy fitted sheets from.
Never had a problem buying superking duvet covers from most retailers.
It's so cozy I'm still in it!!

Superking bedding is readily available wherever sells good bedding.

My superking is a dark wood sleigh type bed so has a head board/foot of bed.

Changing the sheets is a good work out.

TeaAndHobnob · 03/01/2021 12:04

You'll have no problem finding bedding, most places that do homeware will sell super king bedding. Maybe not every range will have that size but there will be choice. We got some lovely sets from John Lewis.

Honestly don't know how we managed in a double previously. Love our bed. So much space.

The only drawback now is going on holiday - so many holiday homes just have doubles and I can't deal with that for longer than a night or two. I find myself spending longer to find somewhere with at least a king size bed now.

Mummyto3gorgeousgirlies · 03/01/2021 12:30

We have had a superking for 4 years - love it! We bought from made.com with a fabric frame and headboard built in in the sale I think and a mattress from a local mattress warehouse.
Can't see the exact one we bought available any longer but similar to the follow:

Love our super king we bought it last month when we moved house and as others have said don't know how we managed in a double now there is so much room it fits four of us in there and still space (young toddlers).

Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly · 03/01/2021 20:20

Thanks everyone! I’ve ordered it! So excited. I also ordered a new duvet and sheets from John Lewis and 2 duvet sets from Dunelm. Just looking for a headboard now.

Love our super king but getting the mattress up the stairs was an absolute nightmare and I would only ever have zip and link mattresses now.

TK Maxx always have a good selection of super king bed linen.

Mixingitall · 03/01/2021 20:52

Same as everyone upthread. We love our super king and wouldn’t go back.

The only downside is that the pillow cases, duvet and bottom sheet now take 2 loads to wash, rather than one, and if I don’t tumble dry, pegging out the duvet cover isn’t easy alone!

Enjoy!

NotDonna · 03/01/2021 21:43

Another superking here. Ours is from loaf; French style. Absolutely love it. We have one deep mattress but two duvets. The bed is incredibly spacious! I like the duvet to be bigger than the bed so on the kids double beds there’s king duvets; on the kingsize guest beds there’s superking duvets, etc. I struggled to find a larger than superking duvet for our bed so there’s two singles. Perfect for any duvet hoggers!

northernstars · 03/01/2021 21:53

Love our super king. We bought the extra wide pillows too so there isn't a gap in the middle. Dunelm do the long pillowcases.

ThatWindowNeedsAClean · 04/01/2021 08:01

@Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly can you definitely get a 6ft mattress up your stairwell? We had a 5ft mattress and that only just made it up the stairs and into our bedroom as the landing was hard to negotiate.

A lot of people who go for a 6ft superking do what John did and we did too which is a zip and link where you get a 3ft mattress each and they zip together, you cannot feel the zips as they are between the mattresses below the piping on the edge. Plus you don't share a mattress so you don't feel your partner moving around as much. They are used in hotels a lot as they can separate the beds into a twin room.

I have a slightly quilted mattress topper on the bed and our bedding comes from anywhere from Dunelm, Asda, Next etc. The only thing is your pillows can look quite lost.

We have 2 superking pillows behind our normal pillows but that is because when the children were little they would get in bed with us to watch a film etc. You will struggle to get superking pillowcases though. They were from Dunelm.

20viona · 04/01/2021 08:05

Almost everywhere that's decent does superking bedding, even eBay you can get a set for £20. Splashing out on a superking is the
Best decision you'll ever make x

Terfterfterf · 05/01/2021 17:10

IKEA Hovag mattresses - 2 single ones on our IKEA wooden super king size bed (now 23 yrs old!) and a John Lewis mattress topper on top. Mostly IKEA bedding too, as it's 100% cotton. IKEA mattresses come tightly rolled so no problem getting them upstairs. Most comfortable bed I've ever slept in Smile
