Please help me choose a new sofa and rug

Earlier this year I layed the parquet floor and redecorated. The L-shaped sofa is falling to bits and they no longer match the room (too much brown!), but we have held out for the sales to buy a new one. I'm now struggling to find something I like which will suit the room. We don't want to change the sizes much and would prefer fabric, but will need to use throws/have washable covers as DCs are still fairly young. I am not a grey fan (it's been over-done in so many houses I've worked in, and I think it's beginning to look dated), but feeling resigned that it may have to be the answer here.
I also want a rug to go under the coffee table. I have bought and returned a few now that haven't been right including one which (in the shop) had just the right green in it to match the walls. DH is pushing for grey...

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Anyone?

I would go for a Kilim rug with green in to match the walls then pick another colour from the kilim and use that for the sofas.

For practicality I would go for ikea sofas (buy cover-less) and get washable Bemz/soferia/comfort works covers.

Lovely room btw

This just popped up on my iPad loaf.com/products/squisharoo-sofa. How about orange for sofa? It would go well with green

HelloDulling · 30/12/2020 08:29

Not grey! I wound go for mustard, orange or a grassy green.

Sittinginmyoodie · 30/12/2020 08:32

I also think something from IKEA might be a good shout because of the changeable covers.

I have to admit, I'm not a fan of the green and it makes the room feel cramped. Personally, I would have the walls lighter and go for that shade of green on the sofa and rug.

This green is lovely. Defitely match the room with navy blue!

Navy blue sofa, and the rug can be either patterned or plain navy blue/deep purple/ dusky pink. Same accent colours in cushions and throws.

To brighten the room, have lots of lamps in the corners and mirrors placed strategically.

Gold accessories.

Also a vote for Orange or Mustard.

Recruit2020 · 30/12/2020 10:03

And gold accessories. Like frames?

Namechangeychangey · 30/12/2020 11:09

Ooo, I hadn't considered orange/mustard - that could look lovely! I will be off to do some Googling this morning. DH may need a little convincing as he struggles with 'seeing' something until he sees it IYKWIM and will prefer a safer option (but I can be quite persuasive so fingers crossed!).

Lamps are definitely on my radar, we just haven't got room at the moment with the giant brown lump of sofa. I will pick some to match the new sofa once I know what is going in there.

Sittinginmyoodie yes, I appreciate the colour won't be to everyone's taste. It is surprisingly light in there in the daytime (pictures were taken early evening), but it is a room that is mostly used in the evening so we wanted something cosy. It was previously cream with a cranberry red Laura Ashley paper in the alcoves behind the floating shelves, but it always looked rather lacklustre and felt chilly in the evening.

Love the green OP. Mind me asking what brand/shade it is?

And yes to mustard, orange or navy!

justaweeone · 30/12/2020 11:19

What a lovely room, will have a little think!

userxx · 30/12/2020 12:08

I love your elephant.

SometimesIWonderWhy · 30/12/2020 12:37

I would have a light grey/duck egg blue sofa myself, I think the room needs brightening up.
I would have a woven seagrass/jute rig on the floor - or possibly black and white.

Sorry I disappeared! I have been avoiding MN for a couple of days as the corona chat was getting a bit overwhelming.

Wow, thank you for all those links justaweeone! There are some lovely pieces in there. The Ikea rug is one I tried but it just didn't look right in situ, sadly. I really like the Dunelm one, so I think that could be a go-er. I really like the corded fabric on the Crumpet sofa too.

Thanks userxx. It was my Dad's. He travelled a lot to places in the 80s that were considered rather unusual destinations at the time, and brought home all kinds of bits and bobs. I have a whole herd of wooden elephants from teeny tiny to that big one. Baggage weight limits were clearly not an issue back then Grin

Could you buy a nice throw to put over the sofa(s) - at least until you find what you want. That's what we are doing with our rather battered leather sofa.

userxx · 03/01/2021 17:29

@Namechangeychangey How amazing!! Yeah, you certainly wouldn't be getting away with that in a jet 2 allowance 🤣.

Fattoushka · 03/01/2021 17:40

I think mustard would look fab with that green. I love your mirror, the angle on the 2nd pic makes it look like a doorway to another —world — room Grin

Namechangeychangey · 03/01/2021 18:10

savvy7 sadly they are past the 'chuck a throw on them' stage. The fixings that hold the sections together are now broken beyond repair (I've repaired them a few times), the seats have a very low sag when you sit in them, and part of the back is broken so you can't lean back on that section. We have been making do for the last few years, hoping to see through the potty training years (now behind us!) and DCs desire to smear stickiness everywhere (not yet passed this stage) before they went.

OldLang sorry, I forgot to answer your question. It's Dulux Trade 'Woodland Fern 1' in a scrub-able finish (diamond matt?).

Your parquet floor is gorgeous, not a huge fan of that green colour though, I definitely prefer a lighter, more subtle green like Neptune’s olive which is a little more relaxing I think.
Don’t think anyone should buy a sofa to go with their wall colour in case you want to change it one day. But a neutral oatmeal, or cream colour would really compliment the space.

But I think a beaut real, oatmeal or creamy shade of sofa would look good with the wall.

Orange springs to mind mixed with reds, bright pinks in a rug and cushions. I’d go full boho with that room. Floor is gorgeous.

My thoughts exactly, I’d go lighter on the walls and get a dark green sofa.
