What colour to paint my front door?

Aagh I am going cross eyed looking at paint charts!

What colour would you suggest for a Victorian house front door- with terracotta colour brick and front pathway, like this one.

I would prefer a dark colour, maybe a Farrow and Ball one?

Any recommendations or pictures please?!

Farrow and Ball Railings or Downpipe?

BaronessVonCake · 20/12/2020 21:51

Like them both but worried that Downpipe might look a bit too green in some lights?

Hmm maybe! I’ve got a colour match of Railings ready to go on my front door when I get round to it as thought it would look great with our brick colour (v similar to yours)

TornadoOfSouls · 20/12/2020 22:00

Railings would be better than Down Pipe I think. I have used Hague Blue before which is an excellent front door colour.

SavoyCabbage · 20/12/2020 22:14

My front door is Down Pipe and I don't like it at all. It's so dull. It's like an office door rather than the door to a home,

Following for inspiration.

I would get the colour chart and look to blend across from the brock colour to the grey/green/blue hue that you want.

Downpipe looks to be blue hued, so won't blend with the red brick so well.

depending on the red of the bricks, Brassica, London Clay, Pelt? get a F&B colour chart and read across it or look online for their recommendations.

colette100 · 21/12/2020 04:49

Alternatively, not try something from either the same Hue Family or complementary Hue Family to the brick?

Dark blue woild look look lovely, although i have dak red with similar colured bricks and it looks great, so ts all about the tone of the paint.
Personally id buy a dulux trade card. Literally tens of thousands of colours. Gind a coliur you like, always go 2 clshades darier for a front door door or youll ge dazzled or 2 shades paler for walls (unless you want a very dark colour). You have an endless supply of choices and volour hues and tones and they are available in every finish from a shop rhat mixes. Trade also mix farrow and ball in dulux gloss if you want something more hardwearing

Inchyra blue by farrow and ball looks for gorgeous on the front door of our Victorian terrace. This is not a photo of our door but gives you an idea!

I love all the blues that are being suggested. If you want something a bit softer looking, some of the F&B greens, such as Green Smoke, would also be worth considering.

(Attached picture is not my front door, but just to give you an idea of what Green Smoke looks like next to brick)

Thank you all, going to go for green smoke - it looks nice against the brick colour. I really ike the v dark greys like railings but house opposite has that colour and I don't want to copy! Have my eye on those blues for our snug which is the next job......

I think the advice is to paint front doors in warmer temperatures than we have now op - sure you already know. My friend painted hers when it was chilly and the paint all cracked!

BaronessVonCake · 21/12/2020 10:48

What do you mean, chilly?! It's a positively balmy 11 degrees here today!?!!!!

But yes, will wait till it warms up a bit I think!

MrsWooster · 21/12/2020 10:51

I know you’ve decided, but delft blue is fab-u-lous against terracotta...

FAQs · 21/12/2020 10:52

Agree with @Bridecilla it’s not suitable weather, it’s chilly ish but also the air is damp this time of year, it’ll dry uneven and cause issues and potentially crack later in the year, wait until at least March and see what the weather is like then.

Baxdream · 22/12/2020 10:14

Firstly I have front door envy!

Secondly, when we were decorating our kitchen (huge room that led into hallway/landing), I emailed farrow and ball and asked advice to match kitchen/carpet and be warm etc. They were so helpful and the colour was gorgeous.
I'd definitely email farrow and ball

BaronessVonCake · 22/12/2020 15:32

You can email farrow and ball for advice?? Amazing!

I'm so rubbish with colour so I'll be going that for sure when I start decorating the rest of the house!

I was trying to get a colour that matched a navy kitchen that wasn't grey. There advice was perfect!

VitreousHumour · 22/12/2020 16:02

Ours is similar to one of the complementary tones that @Colette100 suggested - it took us a farking ridiculous amount of time and two errors to get to it but it looks lovely - annoyingly the shot doesn't show the red brick. Terracotta was one of the errors so I wouldn't go in that direction..

VitreousHumour · 22/12/2020 16:03

It's actually quite a bit darker than that - the sun is on it. Same colour, darker tone.

colette100 · 22/12/2020 16:55

Nice whirligig wreath too! P.s. Do you remember what the colour was? 🌈

TheBeesKnee · 24/12/2020 02:18

I personally love red on red, what you do you think?
