Farrow and ball on walls, Dulux on ceiling?

We are repainting the living room in F&Bs Pointing. To save ones I’m considering just using Dulux on the ceiling. Has anyone done this, and what would be the best shade of Dulux- PBW might be too stark. Thanks for any advice.

All our ceilings are all brilliant white and we never use F&B, just make sure you match the finish - Estate emulsion is very matt, modern emulsion slightly less so.

IMO brilliant white as a contrast makes the colours pop a lot more than using an off white or cream.

We use trade Matt on the ceiling, or supermatt, which is a softer white, I think. It normally doesn't say "brilliant " on the tin/tub. Goes well with F and B.

Thank you both. I went over to the Dulux decorator centre and tried Timeless, Rock Salt and White Cotton next to the Pointing. Timeless actually looks the best and we’ll just buy a pot at Wickes as it’s a standard colour.

The dulux you get in DIY shops isn't the same paint you buy at a decorator centre. It is generally thinner, so even if the colour is the same you will need more coats and it won't have the same texture (I'm married to a painter and decorator).

whataboutbob · 16/12/2020 17:36

@UsernameN0Tavailable I have heard that. As it’s only a small surface and DHs time isn’t at a premium I felt ok using the diy shop stuff. This summer I’ll be repainting a whole flat and I’ll go for the Dulux trade as I understand that should hel get the job done quicker.

I don't actually the f&b is very good paint!

I'm planning on using Dulux Porcelain on my ceilings.

I've previously used Dulux Jabot and F&B Pointing. Out of those I much preferred the Jabot.

These I have used with a mix of F&B, Little Greene and Zoffany paints.

Dulux brilliant white has blue undertones which gives it a cool feel and most F&B paints are warmed toned, so it depends if you like that cool/warm look.
Most people would prefer a warm/warm look...

Bit like House of Colour Winter/Autumn... ie a winter wouldnt wear good jewellery... if you see what i mean.

Colour match F&B with Valspar in B&Q. Same colour, much cheaper.
Also yes, it makes no odds what you put on ceiling.

goldpendant · 16/12/2020 19:25

We use dulux super matt on ceilings too - lovely.

thewinkingprawn · 17/12/2020 21:23

Yes I was going to say colour match f&b with Valspar in b&q - we have done it in every room (used f&b in last house so good comparison) and valspar absolutely no different

PilatesPeach · 19/12/2020 09:10

Johnsons paint will do paint to match F&B loads of people I know do this rather than pay for F&B

whataboutbob · 19/12/2020 09:50

Well it’s done now and it looks lovely. DH has done a great job, much better than I would have. I’m
Pleased to report he says the F&B and Dulux were equally easy to apply. The only thing I might do differently next time is colour match f&b’s All White with dulux as I’m not sure Timeless is the best match for Pointing but I’m still very happy with it all.

@Karcheer I have looked up Jabot online and it looks good. Have ordered a sample card from dulux. I find paint fascinating!
