It’s been in storage and has got damp as it wasn’t wrapped properly. It looks like the coating has come off, it’s bot going to clean off. Any ideas? I’m gutted!

Can’t you just get it reframed

If not by some spray paint and paint it.

A decent frame is expensive. I think I’m probably going to have to sand it down and paint it.

I've spray painted frames before, always worked really well.

Do I need to use a craft paint?

I use Frenchic paint for everything and would recommend it for this too.

I don't think you can fix it to its original state but you can repair it.

Options:

  • spray paint (you can get lots of nice metallic colours).
  • chalk paint (very Matt)

Or if you want a bit of a project you could gold/silver leaf it.

It's not a cheap option but would look lovely. All you need is some size (leaf glue), a soft brush and some leaf.

You clean the frame the thinly apply the size and let it dry so it becomes tacky. Then you use the brush to pick up the leaf and apply. Brush it to burnish it (save the excess you can re-use the bits of leaf. Loads of tutorials on YouTube on how to do it.

I'm by no means a crafter but I've done it and the results are much better than painting.

Thanks, sorry for not replying sooner but I went off to B&Q as it was the only place open. I've got some metallic silver furniture paint. I hope that will work! I couldn't find a spray paint the right colour unfortunately.

I reckon pretty much any spray paint will work, you'd be unlucky if it didn't. Good luck with it!

wouldn't a new frame be cheaper than buying the paint?
