Wallpaper on the stairs

I am in the process of decorating our hall. It's light and airy, with high ceilings plus dado rail. I would love to use wallpaper but am unsure how to deal with the pattern as you go up the stairs.

My parents had that stripey and shiny wallpaper in the 80s, in peach pink and cream. So the stripes looked the same as the angle went up. I'm going for a full on pattern, just not sure how it works on stairs.

I've tried Pinterest and they seem to do paper to the ceiling. That would be a lot of wallpaper in our house. So I guess I paper to the dado rail and have a complimentary paint above? Plus make sure the pattern repeat is less than the height of the dado rail?

We used to have paper above and below a dado on the stairs.. both vertical.

I think it looks great if you get it right

Depends on the wear and tear you expect the wall to get - in my house the DC bash against the wall all the time and a wallpaper would get marked. So I'd paint below the dado (in a hard-wearing finish and probably picking out one of the darker colours in the paper), do the dado in the same colour and then paper above.

I hadn't thought of wear and tear. That would show up more on the bold colours I am looking at. We tend to get marks around the dado rail too.

Am just not sure whether we could paper above the dado rail. We might need scaffold for that because the angle is so awkward.

Hmm. Might need to rethink. And stop googling wallpaper!

You need ladders boards and trestle which you can hire. We've always paid someone for this job

Thanks justasking111. I've never painted a hall and stairwellBlush.

I painted the hall, landing & ceiling white. Not the most interesting but very, very easy
