New cast iron insert but keeping old fire surround

Hi, I’m planning on getting a cast iron insert but want to keep my existing fire surround - has anyone done this?

Just wondering how much damage the fitters might cause when removing my existing fire surround?

I’ve had fireplaces removed and then replaced. It did require a bit of patching of the plaster around where they removed it, but not much.

The tricky thing is getting the surround off without damaging it - if it’s made of marble or other stone this can be a bit dicey (cracks can happen). How easy this is depends in what was used to attach it in the first place. Ours turned out to be easy because it hadn’t been properly attached in the first place
