We have a north facing room with a lots of grey furniture...... what colour can I paint the walls to make it look a bit more welcoming? The walls are currently all white. Suggestions greatly appreciated!

Could you go for a warm white (pink or yellow toned) to counteract the blueness of north light, and add natural accessories (wood, rattan, plants)?
Or are you looking for proper colour?

Hi - despite lots of popular blog posts, you can find colours from every Hue Family, to fit a North facing room.

To help with selection, as yourself -

  • Is the available light in there - Abundant? Moderate? Dim?

  • Are you looking for a white, off-white, light medium or dark colour?

  • What key furniture, finishes, textiles are staying in the room?

All these factors can influence from which Hue Family you choose a colour, how light or dark you go and how colourful or neutral you want it.

After experimenting for a few years, I’ve come to the conclusion that north facing rooms look better when painted in warmer colours. Or at least that’s what I think!

I have Whimbourne White in my north facing living room(which is perhaps a little too subtle) and Pink Ground in my bedroom. I know pinks aren’t for everyone, but they can look really good in north facing rooms, especially ones that lean more towards yellow (like Pink Ground, Setting Plaster etc).

Interesting...not sure how pink will go down in this house but I will buy some testers...

It’s very dim so needs warming up a bit

Ok....setting plaster...wonder if that might be too dark

Setting plaster is lovely, a warm pink. If your co-occupants are skittish about pink, you might find F&B Peignoir can be sold as "warm grey" Wink

Have a look at dulux blush noisette, there are several shades but it's a beautiful colour.

We've just turned our north facing study dumping room into a teen lounge. We used Hague Blue and I love it so much the teens can fuck off, it's my room

I think really rich colours look lovely, dark blues/greens/golds.
Could you post a pic of your room with furniture?
Love your blue walls fab....
