Brown sofa & dado rail - help!

Needing some advice from stylish mumnetters!

We’re doing up our house so spending more time/money on the kitchen but I want to just refresh the living room to last a couple of years before tackling it properly.

We have dark brown sofas (that we have to keep for a few years) so need something that will be ok with that.
We also have a dado rail around the middle of the room (the plaster on our walls is so bad if we remove it, it’ll become a bigger job so need to keep it there for now).

I’m thinking timeless for the top half to keep the room light and breezy but not sure about the bottom- should I stick with brown? Seems boring but I can’t think of a good contrasting colour.

Any help would be appreciated.

Paint the walls above and below the dado rail in Timeless, and the dado rail too so it 'disappears'.

Sounds like my house!
I have a cream on top ( one of the many, many shades of cream available) and used to have a darker cream below. Like a very, very milky coffee.
I actually wall papered the lower half last Summer as an experiment, gone for a cream background with a leafy pattern in greens and browns. It was a last attempt before resorting to the expense of removing the dado and re plastering. Pleased with the results.

@Iwantmychairback yours sounds lovely- I do all the decorating and I’m not very good at wallpapering so going to stick to paint. But I think a leafy green contrast sounds nice.

@Knittedfairies I did think about doing that but not sure if it would feel too plain fur me (I do love colour) but it might be a good option until I can do something more.

Timeless up top, a soft sage green on the bottom?

Dado and wall below it all one darker colour.
