What would you do with this space?

At the moment it is a junk dumping ground. How could I make this a useful space? Potentially storage? I don't want any plant, real or artificial, as I have a very curious cat who would have a munch on it!

It's a fireplace. Get a log burner.

The wallpaper inside the fireplace is an interesting feature!

What age is the property? It probably remove it completely if it’s not relevant to the age.

I would put a shelf in it and then use it as a bookcase for larger books. I think it would look unusual.

For anything else it depends on what you have need.
eg
perfect space for a large toy basket, once pushed in it looks adult, when pulled out full of toys
elegant bowl /glass jar with pebbly stuff in
fill it with nicely cut logs even though you don't have afire, texture and natural = looks nice.
put your dog/cat's bed in it, preferably a great elegant one.
make it into a cupboard for all the board games
