I've just bought a 1950s house, there was this wee fireplace in the bedroom that previous owners tried to camouflage with emulsion.

People told me it was hideous and I should consider ripping it out. Well I like the idea of a fireplace and so with £40 (paint, edging, a carving and tile stickers) and about 5 hours

I've made something I think is pretty and a lovely addition to my dark green room.

I'm chuffed and can't wait to dress it with plants etc.

I dread to think how much removing it would have cost.

So I'm feeling smug ... it's ok to in this situation isn't it?

Completely allowed, it looks gorgeous, and I love your wall colour too. Smug away!

thisgardenlife · 08/11/2020 00:36

Very proud indeed! You've made a lovely job of that - it's a beautiful fireplace now.

cravingthelook · 08/11/2020 00:46

Thanks both 😁

@CosyAcorn it's a Valspar colour called Hidden Gem, it goes from Emerald to a dark forest depending on the light. (my decorator got that colour made in Johnston's durable Matt) I've teamed it with a blush called Gentle Kiss. Operation start putting my furniture in starts tomorrow - finalised with my new black metal bed on Tuesday.

Well done and very clever.

DramaAlpaca · 08/11/2020 01:34

Oh well done! That looks great. Feel as smug as you like, it's perfectly OK Smile

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 08/11/2020 01:34

It looks charming, well done OP.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/11/2020 01:39

You've made a really good job of that 👍🏻

grassisjeweled · 08/11/2020 01:41

bebarkered · 08/11/2020 05:05

JuliaJohnston · 08/11/2020 14:46

CantStandMeow · 08/11/2020 14:48

Love it! The pp who called it charming is exactly right.

SuperbGorgonzola · 08/11/2020 15:14

Beautiful! Well done! It'll look great with your plants.

PanamaPattie · 08/11/2020 15:19

I really like that. Well done. Clever. It will look good with plants or candles. Fab.

Hayeahnobut · 08/11/2020 15:22

The green is a beautiful shade, and the tiles are great too. The black paint and that silver thing on the front really cheapens it though.

Autumnchill · 14/11/2020 18:35

Looks so much better, well done for seeing the vision, looks great

Mumblechum0 · 14/11/2020 18:44

That’s really beautiful, well done!

burritofan · 14/11/2020 18:46

Amazing! You could fill it with candles too instead of plants, if you want a fireplace-esque glow.

Redcrayons · 14/11/2020 18:48

Oh it looks lovely. Are you going to put a mantel over the top?

Merename · 14/11/2020 18:49

That’s fab! Smugness approved.

Q1w2e3 · 14/11/2020 18:51

It’s beautiful! You are definitely allowed to feel smug. I would fill it with candles too. Or if your heart is set on plants wind tiny fairy lights amongst them.

headinthedrawer · 15/11/2020 08:17

It's gorgeous.I also liked it white though. Can't believe people suggested ripping it out.

whenwillthemadnessend · 15/11/2020 08:19

Fabulous. It looks great. Criminal to have removed it.

junglepie · 20/11/2020 18:50

lovely. A woodwick Hearthwick candle would be fab for there. Burns with a lovely crackling sound, with a wide flickering flame very reminiscent of a real fire.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/11/2020 18:21

I like it.
