Currently thinking how we can change the look and feel of our sitting room, working with what we have. All ideas welcome.

We have (and are keeping):

Dark wood floor herringbone pattern, in amtico carved oak here
Dark brown leather extra large sofas (chestnut colour)
Barley type colour love seat
Dark wood coffee table, bookcase and lamp tables in this range Laura Ashley Garret chestnut
Walls painted currently in Laura Ashley twine here but it looks more of a stone colour in our room

We have high ceilings, a fireplace and white emulsion above the picture rail, lots of coving. Room is south facing.

We have a large wool neutral rug, which is under the coffee table, but I’d be happy to replace it

I am looking for ideas for curtains for the big bay window (wouldn’t suit blinds and also wouldn’t be insulating enough), cushions, throws, lamps etc and maybe a rug.

Thank you!

I don't have a clue what your taste is but I would go with something like this O&L print and pull the colours into the room OR keep curtains neutral and change the rug to a heavily patterned one and pull out the colours into cushions and look for a bit of quirk for lamps. Loads of nice lamps around.

Thank you for your steer. I think that would co-ordinate really well, but florals aren’t to our taste. We like more geometric prints and textures and (dare I say it) would go with something a bit less safe.

I think our tastes are very different but everything you have is very neutral and traditional. If you want to mix up could you tweak one of these? So change your units for something more modern or rugs/walls/ accessories for more of colour. It sounds like you've no patterns so maybe a bold wallpaper? Do you have a local interior design shop you could visit when we're out of lockdown?

The Jane Churchill is really nice. It would go well. The bay is large and would easily take a large repeat.

I think it would help if I showed what we were taking down and replacing:

[www.tarjetacolinavecino.cl/453577/2-x-Red/ here]] - on the bottom row, our curtains are the belgravia tomato and we have cushions in that and the mark ham stripe tomato. They are about ten years old now, and we are over the red. It all co-ordinates well (we have taupe colour visions in various textures to soften the darkness and the leather) but it’s had its day.

The furniture and the sofas have to stay. We’ve just redecorated so the walls are staying the same colour too, and we don’t want wallpaper for now. I recognise that this means that we will have a limited palette of colours and tones, but I was hoping not to go red (as we’ve already had it) or orange (we are replacing a rust coloured carpet in our other downstairs reception as we are a bit over that too - just fancy a change after ten years).

I would go for bold jewel colours. Velvet curtains. I love Zoffany and this fabric is beautiful. Would go with a deep gold/mustard on the walls, or the colour they show behind the seat. It is £££ though. You could have a single drop at the curtain edge with plain fabric for the rest?

Sorry, just seen that wall colour is to stay and no red. Never mind.

I don’t think my link worked. This photo should show the colours.
