Which size rug will look better here?

Trying to visualise with sheets! Am buying the La Redoute Vadara rug as the first purchase when doing up my living room, which is an extended 30s semi so quite a long room, with a bit of the old wall which sticks out at the side where it was knocked out to extend, and gets slightly in the way of rug placement if it’s a bigger rug

So if I get the bigger one it will have to sit off centre from the sofa at the end of the room and I don’t know if it looks weird. But the smaller one doesn’t go under the sofas and that’s apparently a design no-no?

Our current rug is even smaller than either of these 2 sizes and when I asked for some styling ideas for this room I was given great advice (the curshions are next to go! And fingers crossed the sofas wear out soon too ), one of which was to get a bigger rug. So either one will be an improvement but I want to get the right one.

@halcyondays The biggest one is 200cmx 290cm. I’m not sure a bigger one would fit as the door would open onto it, and well, it would fill the floor space and we may as well get carpet then! 😆

I like the smaller one. Nice rug. Not heard should go under sofa.

Rug shouldn’t be an island. Furniture should sit on it, or at least the front two feet should.

Rugs should be anchored under furniture so both of yours look a little bit too small.

The rugs are making your already small room look even smaller.

Yes rugs should be big and sit under the furniture.

I think the second one looks fine, personally I would move it across a little further to the left as it looks odd with the front feet just resting on it!

We have a large rug that is about 10 cm shy of the 2 sofas (similar layout to you) and it looks grand!

Also do consider moving the sofas a few inches away from the walls . It might make rug position work better and it can also make the whole room feel a more generous space. I agree with others that rugs look most luxurious and right if big enough for the front legs of the main furniture at least to stand on them.
