I've bought a lovely large glass vase, it's half a metre tall and about 28cm wide - it needs something in it, large and beautiful, please give me some ideas! I just had delivered feathers but they're going back as they're too small ... not keen on fake flowers - was thinking perhaps some ornamental twigs / small branches - help me MN home decorating gurus

Depends on the vibe of your room but absolutely twigs/branches.

Yes to twigs, branches, seedheads. I'm very partial to a glass vase. Mine are all empty apart from one with dried teasels in it, must try harder.

Peacock feathers.

In the spring, pussy willow with catkins branches, beech or chestnut twigs with buds, forsythia branches with buds, apple twigs with buds.

Now, hazel twigs if you can find the very twisted variety, branches with any type of cones or fruits such as medlar or quince, spray of japonica leaves.

Be creative, and wire leaves etc onto for instance bamboo canes to give height.

You can often source pussy willow in markets or flower shops. It lasts for years once you have bought it fresh. The advantage of buying it is that you can pick up metre long stems. Also at Christmas time you can have fun- try rose-hips or silver birch twigs or amaryllis? Or maybe eucalyptus, I'm not sure if that keeps? Or teasels, as suggested, or those metallic blue thistles like echinops.. last suggestion-red dogwood stems.
