Are IKEA sofas worth it?

Our VERY old, massive leather sofa finally got a bit too threadbare and it has gone to sofa heaven in the sky (AKA DH’s man cave, with new velvet loose covers on the seat pads, good enough for gaming not good enough for sitting room). Our dogs are now too old to get on the sofa so I would really like a squishy velvet one for a change. However, we will be decorating within about the next two years (huge job, huge room, needs replastering, bit of masonry work blah blah) so I want to wait til then to get the super duper sofa. But in the meantime I need a stop gap sofa, not massively expensive. I already bought the Rupert from Dunelm. It is surprisingly good in terms of size, comfort and fabric, however after only four months (as is now evidenced, after I bought it, by numerous feedback posts 😡) the front legs snap off if even a butterfly sits for too long on its delicate frame. Don’t worry, I will get a full refund for that one, I’m well practiced at the Consumer Rights Act, but I need something for now. So, for the now, I’m wondering if IKEA are good for sofas? I know IKEA can be a bit hit and miss for furniture but I’ve seen good feedback for sofas. The one I’m thinking of is the Stockholm 2017 (pictured) but general feedback on value for money, sturdiness etc will be appreciated.

Are IKEA sofas worth it?

I bought an IKEA sofa about 8 years ago, second hand, and primarily used it as a dog bed. It was in pretty good nick when I collected it, and is still very very good. I have looked after it, in terms of having it professionally cleaned etc and my two Labs often sleep on it. I've moved house since and it's more on show and I'm still happy with it.

My 15 year old ikea sofa might just be starting to give up the ghost. Still looks fantastic though.

I've got an v expensive (over £2k so mega money for me) sofa and a v cheap IKEA one. I am happy to sit on either and honestly don't have a preference. Says it all.

We had an ikea sofa - landskrona - which has slim arms like that. Actually, we had 2. An arm broke off within weeks, so they replaced that for us. Second one lasted all of a year until Ds2 got over-excited and broke that one.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 06/10/2020 21:49

I have several Ikea Ektorp. Recommended. Also easy to build. Took the DC age 8 - 20 mins.

pinkhousesarebest · 06/10/2020 21:51

We had an Ilea sofa that was the comfiest one ever- Ekescog- so much so that when, at 14 years old it bowed out, we scoured facebook marketplace for a secondhand one. We have two Stocksunds and a Farlov. They are all great. Sturdy and comfy.

Flowersmakemyday · 06/10/2020 22:15

We've had a leather Ikea sofa which was great, had that for about 10 years before it was re-homed. The one we have now is fabric and we've had about 12 months and it's comfortable and again, great.

ramblingsonthego · 06/10/2020 22:19

Tiddifors is my go to IKEA sofa for me. I have had 2 and they have been fab.

movingonup20 · 06/10/2020 22:27

I'm sitting on a £280 Ikea sofa now, it's fine, not squishy enough for long term but we needed a small sofa in a temporary house

magicstar1 · 06/10/2020 22:29

We have a Tidafors which I love. I’d had my eye on one for ages and it was €1100. I happened to be in store when there was one in bargain corner for €350 so I nabbed it.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 07/10/2020 00:10

Wow, overwhelmingly good then, thank you all, looks like it might be a goer!

I have a Nockeby. It's not the largest model - the largest would have been too large.

I struggled to like any of the sofas I was considering - either too squishy, too uncomfortable-looking or too flimsy.

I also like large square arms and the Nockeby delivered.

I was thinking of the landskrona but glad I didn't go for that now I've read this! I already have the armchairs and find them somewhat skinny.

Considering the choice, I found getting a cheapish sofa with support and reasonable quality build quite tough.

If there was still a large Klippan in existence, that would have been my first choice. I've had a small Klippan and it was great.

We have a very expensive sofa in the sitting room and an Ektorp in the tv room and to be honest, I much prefer the ikea, it's far more comfortable

KatharinaRosalie · 07/10/2020 09:44

I have a Grönlid, which is fabulous. Especially the machine washable covers, they've been through the washing machine several times already thanks to DC, and sofa looks like new. Very comfortable as well. Our previous sofa was I think 4 times the price and I would never waste that kind of money again.

justoffshift · 07/10/2020 09:51

Have you seen the reviews for that IKEA one pictured though? Everyone saying the slightest little thing stains the covers.

justoffshift · 07/10/2020 09:53

This is what I'm planning to get - [[https://www.made.com/branagh-2-seater-chesterfield-sofa-electric-blue-velvet. MADE]]

Smallgoon · 07/10/2020 11:06

Happy with mine which I believe is called Grunlid... Invited my neighbours round and they've ended up ordering the same sofa!

Snooper22 · 07/10/2020 11:18

We had an ektorp which was great value for money and also a huge corner lidhult which is really comfy, came in 14 boxes though!!

LiGlitterBug · 07/10/2020 11:27

Love our Ektorp, we bought it as a cheap 'make do' sofa nearly 8 years ago, and it's so comfy we never got round to replacing it. We bought some non IKEA covers when we redecorated, there's lots of companies making them to fit IKEA models.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 07/10/2020 11:34

Right sounds like a no brainer with these replies! And yes re the covers on that model, I’ll have a look at some of the other models instead I think.

We had a stocksund. Really liked it and the covers come off and wash very well.

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/10/2020 11:38

I'd suggest getting a second hand sofa if you're planning on a major refurb in the next 2 years especially as your decorating plans may change in the meantime.

ekidmxcl · 07/10/2020 11:43

My 2 ektorps lasted 15 years and a house move in a big busy family home with lots of people and a dog. That said, you need to be very careful with Ikea sofas - plenty of them have bad reviews. I think my smaller ektorp was less than £300. For 15 years of hard, heavy use, that is insane value for money. You should google reviews for the exact sofa and exact cover because Ikea stuff is sold all over the world and there is extensive info.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 07/10/2020 11:49

My sofa I mentioned above is also a (leather) ektorp. They definitely always seem to come out fab

MJMG2015 · 07/10/2020 17:25

Has anyone had a Vimle?(ikea)

And 'stupid question', but can find details online... do the 'cover 2 seater sofa' include for the frame, the two base seats & the two back rest cushions? Ie ALL the fabric areas?)
