Are IKEA sofas worth it?

Our VERY old, massive leather sofa finally got a bit too threadbare and it has gone to sofa heaven in the sky (AKA DH’s man cave, with new velvet loose covers on the seat pads, good enough for gaming not good enough for sitting room). Our dogs are now too old to get on the sofa so I would really like a squishy velvet one for a change. However, we will be decorating within about the next two years (huge job, huge room, needs replastering, bit of masonry work blah blah) so I want to wait til then to get the super duper sofa. But in the meantime I need a stop gap sofa, not massively expensive. I already bought the Rupert from Dunelm. It is surprisingly good in terms of size, comfort and fabric, however after only four months (as is now evidenced, after I bought it, by numerous feedback posts 😡) the front legs snap off if even a butterfly sits for too long on its delicate frame. Don’t worry, I will get a full refund for that one, I’m well practiced at the Consumer Rights Act, but I need something for now. So, for the now, I’m wondering if IKEA are good for sofas? I know IKEA can be a bit hit and miss for furniture but I’ve seen good feedback for sofas. The one I’m thinking of is the Stockholm 2017 (pictured) but general feedback on value for money, sturdiness etc will be appreciated.

Are IKEA sofas worth it?

Or is it just a large cover that goes over the top of it all? Mucho confusio.

Hmm, can’t help you I’m afraid but looked on the website and it looks from their diagram like it’s the two seat section (cos its modular I guess) with only the armrest covers not included. I forgot to mention, I do have a sofa covered with an Ektorp cover. It looks fabulous and has lasted years. It isn’t an Ikea sofa though, it was a very expensive MultiYork sofa that just happened to be the same shape. When it got grubby (and MultiYork went out of business!) I got the Ikea cover out of desperation but I was really impressed. Good to know the actual sofas are good and sturdy too. Someone mentioned Stocksund, that’s exactly what I’m after (I like a sofa I can clean under) but just noticed they can’t be bought online, and I’m nowhere near a store 🙁

I've got a leather Ektorp that's nearly twelve years old. It's in the dining room now as I moved house and have a bigger sofa in the main room. One cushion has started to collapse a little bit but it still looks great.

MJMG2015 · 07/10/2020 18:21

@Judashascomeintosomemoney

Hmm it's confusing (to me at least) it seems like a cover that will go over all the cushions? (With the arm units being a separate order?!)

What a pain you can't order it online!! I wonder if they'll take a phone order?

I like one that sits on the floor (not legs) as I don't like feeling I've got to 'sit properly' (lest it collapses) Good job we're all different 🙇🏻‍♀️

FoxtrotEcho · 07/10/2020 18:31

We have a Grevie, which I would not recommend - looks fabulous but is surprisingly uncomfortable to sit on after a while. Also the front has a tendency to break (ours did and a lot of reviews say the same). Surprisingly poor design. I have sofa regret 😢

I'm on a Stockholm right now. Orange. I love it because it's so deep. The arms are really high though so you can't reach your tea.

😂 very good point. Such an overlooked criteria

That's why I got a Nockeby. You can put your tea and your lunch on the arms.

StitchInTimeSavesNine · 08/10/2020 08:24

Yes, I've had a Kvick before as the arms are like a table.

SpeckleDust · 08/10/2020 08:34

@MJMG2015

Has anyone had a Vimle?(ikea)

And 'stupid question', but can find details online... do the 'cover 2 seater sofa' include for the frame, the two base seats & the two back rest cushions? Ie ALL the fabric areas?)

Also interested in opinions on the Vimle - I'm thinking of getting a big L-shaped one but want to know it will last.
CoffeeDay · 08/10/2020 08:52

The Kivik is fantastic value and comfort but it doesn't last very long. The cushions are made from a very flimsy felt/foam material and will end up sticking to the covers and dissolving into pieces. Removing and washing the covers get more precarious every time!

Having said that we love it, as we wanted a functional sofa DD can trash while she's young without anyone worrying about spilled drinks, crayons, smears etc. Once she's old enough, it'll get replaced and the cost per use has long paid off.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 08/10/2020 09:08

I have just bought a fancy new sofa as my cats have trashed my Kivik by sitting on the back cushions. Its still comfy though, just looks a bit tatty. If they cats fuck up my new sofa I will be very cross. But I know its inevitable sigh

I have the Stocksund after many years of Ektorp. I'm very happy with it - minor irritations is that the seat covers are only proper fabric on one side so you can't just flip them over. It is showing as available online for me though (and I did order them online when I got them a few years back). I guess it is area dependent.

I've just found the same and I am SO annoyed. Finally persuaded DP the Stocksund is the way to go (I've wanted a matching set for years), it is showing available to buy online (we are three hours from a store) but then unavailable for delivery when I put in my postcode. 😡

Anyone got a non-Ikea Stocksund alternative??

Plussizejumpsuit · 08/10/2020 09:55

We've had our ikea sofa for 10 years. It's our only sofa and still going strong.

Amrythings · 09/10/2020 13:55

We've had the an L-shape Vimle with the ottoman chaise for about four years now and it's doing rightly under pretty constant abuse. I did crack and buy new covers recently so that I can wash and wear, because the toddler is sadly one of those sticky children no matter how well he's washed.

We wouldn't get another one, because it's really a bit too low for DH and both sets of parents complain about their knees, but if you're all shortarsed young things like me and DSD you're grand.

@MJMG2015 because it's modular you buy the seat section (base cushions and back) and then the arm covers separately. Remember to get two, I blithely thought the arm covers would be a two pack and had to traipse back the next week.

MJMG2015 · 09/10/2020 14:43

@Amrythings. Thank you for that! I've your 'sticky child now matter how well washed' 🤣

I'm a short arse, not quite 5ft, but I have bad knees and end up dropping onto the current sofa & have to sit on a certain bit to get up...so not sure about the height?! I'll have a measure of the other sofa I don't usually sit on, see what the height if that is! But thank you for the heads up AND about the arm covers 🤣
