Pic Can / Would you strip this Ercol table?

Got the chance buying this lovely Ercol table second hand for a bargain price. Trouble is our living / dinning room has pine floorboards and I don't think the wood will match.
Can you strip the table and re varnish it all or will that ruin it forever? If you could would you advise getting a professional todo it or attempt it yourself?

You certainly can - I've done it with my smaller version of this table.

I got someone to do mine as I had neither the skill nor the inclination.

If you decide to not buy the table however, please would you send me the details as I'm on the hunt for one myself!!

The thing with wood is it doesn’t have to match. Different woods will often blend rather than match.

headinthedrawer · 01/10/2020 14:55

Personally I wouldnt strip it.It's beautiful. It will still go with your floors.I think you would struggle to get that original ercol lacquer back and in its original state it is only going to increase in value over time.

Trut · 01/10/2020 14:59

No...please don’t strip, especially if it is original varnish!

It can look great on floors with a different finish. If you share a photo of your room, maybe there are easy ways to harmonise the contrasts? (Eg, rugs, plants etc. )

Beamur · 01/10/2020 15:01

I'd leave it too. I don't think wood needs to match.
Maybe put something like a really flat kilim under the table if it needs visually breaking up.

bodgeitandscarper · 01/10/2020 15:09

I wouldnt strip it, I think you'd regret it!

Janegrey333 · 01/10/2020 16:06

It’s lovely as it is.

Thanks for the replies. I would hate to ruin something that is such a classic. Here is the room it will be going into, what do you think? There just seems to be so much wood?!
It's going into the dinning part of the Rio. Is you see what I mean?

This.

Please don't - it's lovely as it is.

Matchy matchy isn't worth it - it would be a travesty!

Mosasaur · 05/10/2020 09:30

The matchy matchy look is really old fashioned. I’d leave it as it is. You can have contrasting wood.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 05/10/2020 09:34

I’ve stripped ercol - it strips down really well and the wood underneath is beautiful. The shapes are really classic and lend themselves to keeping as they are and also to stripping or painting. I do think you would have difficulty doing the chairs though and getting a uniform look across them all (if that’s what you are going for).

FamilyOfAliens · 05/10/2020 09:40

I think it would look lovely in your room - just make sure you have left enough space to pull the chairs out and move comfortable around the table.

And don’t forget to let me know as well if you change your mind Grin

Graffitiqueen · 05/10/2020 09:44

Don't strip it, it'll look lovely in that room.

Trut · 05/10/2020 13:01

@waterjungle, your rooms are beautiful. As a op mentioned, I would put a kilim or another beautiful flat rug, either under or near the dining space to create visual areas. And variegated potted plants tall enough to complement the room
