My daughter’s 16th birthday is coming up. Have no idea what to get her and she is very undemanding. Will undoubtedly be asked my both sets of grandparents what she’d like.
Her room hasn’t been done since she was about 9 and is still all pink fairies, which, bless her, she hasn’t complained about really.

I thought it might be an idea to get new curtains / bedding / cushions and to pretty up her room a bit as she now seems to live in there 23hours a day.

Any tips on where from? Pinterest links or snaps of your own teens’ bedrooms welcome!

Thank you

My teen hankers over some led strip lighting which you can get from amazon

Bluntness100 · 06/09/2020 17:04

Why don’t you ask her what she wants, instead of strangers on the Internet?

Thisismytimetoshine · 06/09/2020 17:06

I'd redecorate her room just because it has pink fairies, not as a birthday gift.

Howcoldmytoes · 06/09/2020 18:49

Would love to be able to afford to redo it all and for it not to be a gift, but we can’t. Will repaint and do woodwork etc, but nice cushions / curtains / bedding etc will probably add up to several hundred pounds, hence hoping some of it can be presents from grandparents. The only other thing she’s actually expressed an interest in is a GoPro, which we’ll give her ourselves.
She seems keen on updating her room, but isn’t really into interiors at all, so I wondered if anyone had any tips / room set ideas which I could show her. Zara Home used to have some nice things, but they look a bit dull at the moment. Anthropologie?
I’d hoped more clues up people could point me in the right direction then I could see what she thought.

Thanks for the strip lighting idea, will have a look.

My daughter, who is older, just moved into her own flat. It is fundamentally pale grey. So I bought her a load of blush pink stuff, gorgeous lights, a throw, some cushions etc.

I’d advise picking a colour scheme she likes, then going with it

Also do you need curtains? What about blinds. I just ordered these, which fantastic with pale grey walls.

You can also get some fab cushions off of amazon quite cheaply priced.

I ordered these. Inexpensive but lovely.

Bed side lights I got these

And this throw.

Pale grey walls with blush pink accessories might not be her thing. It could be different colours, but you get the idea. What colours does she like, then paint the walls one colour and then add accessories in another.

My daughter coming up 14 is requesting a room renovation which she will get for her birthday as nothing wrong with shay she has currently. She has shown me what she wants from Pinterest. It’s all from ikea thank goodness and consists of Alex drawers and desktop, Lack tall shelving units, Nissedal mirror and the big bulb dressing table light things. A pretty upholstered chair and new hard flooring. Can’t find the actual photo she showed me, but similar in style to what I have attached. She also has the led strip lights up just below the ceiling coving and the room is like a disco some evenings!!

YY to nice blind, grey and/or blush throws, bedding, rug and decorative cushions

logichasleftbuilding · 08/09/2020 18:53

Curtains are ridiculously overpriced. I would start by asking her re colour schemes and then choose some nice curtains and bedding as a starting point. Much easier to find paint to go with curtains than other way round.
Is she a plain or patterns type of person?

Depending on your daughter's taste, my neighbour showed me a pink sheepskin rug she got from Dunelm that was very reasonable and would go with a blush pink scheme.

I am not so much into the blush pink but I'd recommend H&M home for more reasonably priced homeware. They have some great bits.

I also just got some really nice curtains from Anthropologie if she likes the more boho look (Berber rugs and macrame). They are expensive though.

Also check out la redoute for rugs and Maisons Du Monde for lots of other styles of interiors. Also Next home can have some real gems (just ordered a great cream/black berber-esque rug from there, plus a black curtain pole for the Anthropologie curtains and a nice light fitting).

I think it's a lovely idea (I'm doing the same for DD's 16th) and she's going to ask grandparents etc for throws, cushions, lamps, duvet cover. They'll like that instead of "just give me some money please" Smile

Instagram is a good source of inspiration - DD fancies this colour for one wall and white for the others.

She's going to get a waffle duvet cover in white (Dunelm) so she can put different coloured throws on it (Dunelm & IKEA). And some baskets for random stuff.

She also wants a Malm dressing table and Alex five drawer (both IKEA) and she's going to frame a couple of posters.

Enjoy planning the makeover with your DD!

MrsSlocombesPussy · 09/09/2020 11:11

My DD is 15 and chose her own colour scheme. One dark purple wall, and the other walls a lilac shade. Pale purple carpet and dark purple curtains!
Although, I don't know why we bothered getting her a new wardrobe, as you can't even see her carpet for clothes. And her walls are covered in K Pop posters!
She does like having a grownup bedroom for when her friends come round.
Until she was 13 she still had the Mamas & Papas decorations we bought before she was born!

I know the IKEA Alex drawers are a big hit with teenage girls, great for storing make up/small things and also school/college work.
Does she need a dressing table? If so IKEA Malm and Besta Burs are both very nice and quite glam.
La Redoute is really good for bedlinen. Can you set up a Pinterest board with her to get more of a feel.
I think its a nice idea and a good plan for a birthday treat which your family can help with too.
