How to restore bentwood chairs

I have some lovely bentwood chairs that are getting wobbly. I’ve contacted a furniture restorer (from checkatrade) to ask about having them strengthened, and he said that he finds taking chairs like this apart and re-glueing then helps.

Has anyone had this done and did it help much?

I’m guessing that part of the problem is that the wood around each screw has worn away a bit. Does anyone know whether there’s anything that can be done about this, such as filling the screw holes with filler then putting the screws back in?! (No idea whether this would work!)

Thanks for any thoughts on this!

I don’t think filler is ever really strong enough!

Could you re-glue the joints then if necessary put in slightly larger (ie “fatter” not “longer”) screws? I’ve not tried that myself but it seems like it should work (famous last words!).

That’s an interesting thought - thank you!
