Would you rather....Bed spacing?

Our new master bedroom is long and narrow, we’re going to get a super king bed. Would you rather:
A) 1ft either side of your bed with 8ft at the bottom
B) 4ft either side with 2ft at the bottom.

We don’t know where wardrobes will go yet. If we go for option B we might get built in over the bed style ones :)

I think A sounds cool. Get some little shelves for bedside tables and make some use of the rest of the space.

I'd probably try the bed in both positions before deciding though.

Can you actually walk up the 1 foot gap or will you have to crab in to bed?
It sounds ever so tight to be honest, depending on the placement of doors and windows of course.

Where are the windows and doors? I think I’d rather have the bed with 2ft at the end and then 2ft on one side and the remainder on the other.

The bed with 1ft spacing will be under the window with the door on the left wall at the bottom as if you were laying in bed and a built in cupboard in the right corner. I’ve always wanted an ottoman which this room gives us the chance to have. It isn’t actually the master bedroom, but window placement in the master means that putting a big bed in is really awkward.

To begin with we’ll have a newborn so actually we’ll probably have to have option B for a short while to accommodate the next to me crib.

Shock Why on earth are you squeezing a 6ft wide bed into an 8 x 14 ft room?

We have 1.5ft either side of our bed, and that's really tight. Get a double, or king at a push and have layout A.

I’d choose A but get a king not a super king.
If the super king is non negotiable then B as a 1ft gap is too small to walk in.

I would have it with 2ft at the bottom and then 2ft-ish on one side and 6ft-ish on the other side. Beds don't need to be centred.

B to allow for bedside tables/drawers/lamps and physically getting in/out of bed. Scooching down to the bottom to get out of bed is annoying.

@titchy we currently have just over 1ft at either side of our bed in our current room, but only have a couple of ft at the bottom too so it feels tiny. We’re used to the narrow space and it doesn’t really bother us. But we only have double bed and one of the things we really want when we move home is space for a king/super king bed.

A, but with a king rather than a super king and an extra six inches on each side. Built in wardrobes over the bed are awful.

@Zhampagne are you speaking from experience re wardrobes over bed? Or is it just your opinion? If the former can you explain further because I’ve always liked the look of them but never actually had them

Both!

There were over-bed fitted wardrobes in three of the bedrooms in our house when we moved in and we have had to live with them for a while, as removing them means getting the wall behind skimmed to make good the damage and we could only afford to do one at a time. This isn’t my house but it’s a close example.

I find them very oppressive to sleep under and I don’t like having to stand on the bed to access the upper section.

However I’ve also never liked the look of them so if you do these things might not bother you.

Honestly, I don’t think your room is big enough for a superking sized bed. We’ve a king size with a 1.5ft gap to one side of it (other side is door), and it isn’t great, I’d prefer a standard double and a less cluttered room!

Could you keep your double until after your baby is in his/her own room and decide after that?

I think people saying go for a smaller bed are mad. I would always go for the biggest bed i could fit in.

1ft either side sounds fine, and probably close to what we have now, just space for a bedside table either side

I am about to move to a house that the master is 7 x 17 ft and really debating using it as a dressing room / couch bed for spare rather than my bedroom. But it has high ceilings fitted wardrobes and an en suite.

I would be getting a standard double with 1ft either side and some slim shelves. That gap seems small but doable
