Hanging curtains - photo attached

Moved into a house and it's full of beautiful, well fitted, made to measure curtains. Most I'll keep, apart from these.

My question is, why do they hang just below the radiator? Is it for heat circulation?

I'm thinking my new curtains will be better just skimming the radiator or even to the windowsill. What would you do?

Do they tuck behind the radiator?

I'd assume the length would look a bit odd and too short if they were above the radiator

No, they don't took behind the radiator. What about windowsill length, like these?

I would assume it was to tuck behind the radiator she closed so that the heat doesn't go straight behind the curtains and warm just the window up.

I would prefer having a deeper windowsill and the curtains ending to that length. Then the heat from the radiator will be directed into the room - rather than behind the curtains and up into the window.

Is there room to raise the curtain rail higher rather than trying to change the hem length?

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 05/08/2020 15:15

sorry i think the second picture looks ridiculous, they are too short and look like someone has just used whatever they had around rather than getting the correct length.

Try tucking them behind the radiator, you may be surprised.

Curtains should always be full length IMO

HasaDigaEebowai · 05/08/2020 15:17

Those are WAY too short.

thisstooshallpass · 05/08/2020 16:32

I agree the 2nd pic are too short, these were in a rental I was temporarily in and all the curtains were crap. It was more of an example to show if they'd be better skimming the windowsill.

I'm not keen on tucking curtains behind the radiator, they would even more badly fitted.

I think I'll drop my new curtains to the radiator, and not draw them?!

Can't you go with long ones. I can promise you they will look a million times better.

They will also block the heat from the radiator.
SoupDragon · 05/08/2020 17:40

(I have long ones and it is a pain in the winter)

HasaDigaEebowai · 05/08/2020 18:36

They will also block the heat from the radiator.

Not if paired with a roman blind. Or tucked behind the radiator.
Short curtains almost inevitably look cheap IMO.

clairedelalune · 06/08/2020 05:29

I'd go with a blind...

burritofan · 06/08/2020 12:39

Can you move the radiators? No need for them to be under a window. Then put your curtain rail as high up on the wall as possible, and have curtains hemmed to floor length – "kissing" the floor (I.e) barely skimming it, or puddling if dust and small children aren't an issue. Windowsill length curtains never look good.
