Bunk beds and waking for the loo

To make more space for playing, I’m thinking of getting bunk beds for the kids (7 & 2yrs).

The eldest sometimes wakes up suddenly in the night and leaps out of bed, not entirely awake, usually needing the loo!

Are bunk beds a bad idea? Eldest on top bunk. Can I get one that has a tall guard rail almost like a cot at the top, or would that just feel like a cage?

Got bunks for my boys at the same ages (now 8 and 3). They have been fine. Ikea sell one that has a much lower top bunk (The Tuffing) which is easier to make the bed and not too scary a height.
Be warned, its evil to put together and will result in much swearing. But loved it once it was done.

Look for space between bunks - ours an adult could sit comfortably on bottom bunk, and a proper ladder with wide steps - narrow or round ones hurt feet.
