Does anyone have a velvet sofa?

Our current sofa was bought second hand 5 years ago and is breaking my back, so it definitely needs replacing. Pre corona DP and I fell in love with a navy velvet sofa. It looks so luxurious and pretty.

Around the same time my velvet office chair arrived from Made. After sitting on it for 3 months I don't think I want a velvet sofa. I feel rather steamy on the chair, so I imagine that a sofa would be the same? Our current one is leather, so I have nothing to compare it to. I don't know if it's just velvet that gets too hot, or if it's the same issue with fabric sofas in general? I definitely don't want another leather one as I stick to it in summer and it's freezing in winter!

DP is still stuck on getting a velvet one because the other fabric samples look "cheap and nasty" 🙄

Velvet is a dust magnet for every fibre known to mankind.
If you had say, a velvet dress, and you dropped guacamole dip on it, how easy would it be to clean it off?
Now think about a piece of furniture that you cannot whisk to the dry cleaners...

Any materials you would recommend which look good but aren't dust magnets?

Love our velvet couch. My only regret is that I didn't go for navy! Looks great, comfy. Needs hoovered occasionally but so do most couches except leather I'd imagine.

What type you thinking of?

I have to say that it wipes clean very easily as well.

We initially wanted a chesterfield one, but then DP sat on the Ashford sofa in Next and now thinks it's the most comfortable thing on the planet Hmm

I'm kind of willing to let him have his way on this as I basically picked out the kitchen, so fair is fair, right?

I'm just worried about sitting on it and overheating and getting too sweaty. I'm now worried about dust. Do you find yours gets dusty? May I ask what type you have?

Yes, a claret one from next. I love it but it isn’t anywhere near as comfortable as the one we sat on in the shop.

Perhaps it needs a few thousand more bums on it before it reaches that same level of comfort? Grin

@CoalTitCafe if got more than enough bum to break it in myself Grin

No I don't think it's particularly dusty but I'm not the most observant or house proud 🤣 It's the french connection zinc in velvet

sonicbook · 18/07/2020 21:15

My only complaint is that it's not comfy to sleep in because your clothes kind of get stuckonnit when you roll around lol

CoalTitCafe · 18/07/2020 21:23

Ooh that could be a sticking point, I love napping on sofas.

What about blankets? I have a wool one, do you think that will cause any issues?

No I shouldn't think so. They look great and are comfy but the clothes sticking when lying on it is annoying. I'm doing. It now and annoyed 😠

I think they are probably okay in rooms you don’t use often, but they get too dusty otherwise. I prefer suede

bouncydog · 19/07/2020 19:11

We had our 20 year old sofas re-covered in dark purple velvet! You can get different sorts and ours is washable. It doesn’t get dusty but it does show up white cat hair! However a quick rub with a clean rubber trainer sole is brilliant for removal. If you want velvet then I think Loaf do something called clever velvet!

Oh I would love a Loaf sofa but they're enormous and my living room is tiny Sad

Love our velvet sofa and armchair - we have the Rupert from Dunelm, in dark green.
We have two cats, yes the fur shows but it comes off really easily with the hoover or even your hand.
Only had a couple of spills, but they seem to have come off fine with a gentle sponge clean.

squareofthehypotepotenuse · 19/07/2020 20:32

I love our velvet sofas! Really comfy, very stroke-able...And super easy to clean. I had been concerned when we bought them, but they are polyester velvet (honestly not as nasty as that sounds) and stuff just lifts straight off with the fabric cleaner we got with them. Including cat vomit (bleurgh). I have a stiff upholstery brush I use on them to keep the pile nice, but when I’m being lazy and don’t do it for a while they still look great.
