Main Light Dilemma - What To Go For?

I've decorated my room in this wallpaper.

I'm getting these wall-mounted light fittings for the alcoves.

The house was built in 1890 so I'm aiming for a victorian style.

My dilemma is the main, central ceiling light. Because the wallpaper is pretty full-on and the wall-mounted lights are a bit of statement, I don't know what to do about the main, central light. I don't want something too decorative or statement-y because it'll make the room look cluttered and tacky. But I also don't want anything too plain.

I was thinking of getting this and then just having a plain (maybe green?) light shade but is that a bit boring?

What about something like this? I also like this kind of style but would this work with the wall-mounted lights?

The room's about 4m by 5m so not huge. For now, don't worry about size/colours of fittings/shades - I am just after some advice about styles.

I'd really appreciate any insights anyone's got.

Sorry, I should also say that I've got this ceiling rose in the middle of the room that the light will come out of.

The wall lights have shades so I'd go with a chain pendant in the same metal and the same shade (but bigger obviously). Or the Jim Lawrence as second choice.

My issue is how well I'd be able to match the shades of the wall-mounted lights and the central light - I think having them slightly different colours would be awful.

If I did this, what colour would you go for? The paper's a blue background with green leaves and then pinky/red fruits. I've got a pink sofa and a mustard yellow chair arriving soon. I don't want to be too matchy but I'm concerned that another accent colour might look a bit strange. What do you think?

Knowing you have more colours coming then I wouldn't add another colour it would have to be one of the existing ones, sofa probably. The shades would have to be from the same range to be the same shape and colour. So possibly not the shade that comes with the wall light. But I think keeping the metals the same and a glass shade is my preference.

The people who do the wall-mounted lights also make bog standard shades in the same colour range as their wall-light shades so that's good .

You can actually customise the wall-light shades so I'm thinking of going for a plain colour (truffle?) on the outside and then a colour on the inside (maybe green?) because you won't see too much of it so it won't look too much like another colour in the room.

But I do also love the glass shades. My god, this is so hard. I've been doing the house for years and this is the very final stage so I feel as though I have to get it right!!

But then if I went for the green on the inside of the wall-mounted lights, I could have a green shade (the outer colour) for the main light. The ceiling and frieze are pure white so the green main light shade would be in a sea of white rather than against the busy wallpaper.

The shade is easily changed once the fitting is done so how about just going with the larger version of the wall shade or glass, neither will be terribly wrong and nothing to stress about. Good luck.

Seeing the picture now and realising that it will be seen against white I would go glass. Or a very big shade given the scale of the room (height). But I would prefer no colour at ceiling level.

I need to bear this in mind, thanks! The road to get to the stage I'm at now has been so bloody long that I'm putting pressure on to make sure everything is perfect.

I think I just need to make the decision about the green shade... green shade, yellow chair and pink sofa might be a bit much! I don't think I want a plain shade in the middle.

Gosh no I didn't mean a plain fabric shade I was meaning the glass and metal look. If you go for fabric then I would have it an existing colour as the wall shades.

@Noflora I get you! I was thinking of having the wall-light shades in a plain-ish colour on the outside (they have one called truffle) but then with a green colour on the inside. If I was going to match the main light shade with these, I'd be looking at green as the outer colour (because they don't do inner colours for the bigger light shades) which I'm not sure about.

I'm leaning towards metal and a glass shade for the ceiling light and not trying to match in too much (beyond them both being the same shade of metal).

I'm also a bit unsure about colour at ceiling height - it can look okay but also really tacky!

You seem to be struggling with what to call your main/central/ceiling light OP.

@youhave4substitutes As a proud northern from an ex-mining town, I concur with your phrasing of the 'big light'.

BUT I said 'big light' on a thread on here once and 80% of posters were totally confused as to what I meant so I always stay away from it on here these days!
