Why so many pillows?

So you know that bed style with a load of extra pillows and cushions in well co-ordinated colours, two or three upright rows of them? Do you have a bed like that? What do you do with them all when you're sleeping? Is it annoying having to take off all the extra ones to sleep and rearrange them every morning? Is it worth it?

Thank you...

I don’t have that but my MIL does, and I can confirm she puts them on the floor at night and then loads them all on again when she makes her bed the next day. It seems an utterly pointless exercise to me! I could only contemplate it if I had, for example, a little bedroom couch or chaise and they could go there and perhaps sometimes come on the bed during the day if I had visitors and wanted the bed to look extra special.

I have a couple of cushions for show that don’t sleep with me at night, they are relegated to a chair. For me it makes my bed looks cosy and inviting. It also makes me more inclined to make it in the morning because i need to use the chair!

The loads of pillows thing seems American to me, they have it on a lots of shows and also seem to sleep on them differently to my own experience, with the pillows upright?

When we had the bedroom decorated I fancied the idea of loads of cushions. So got them. After a few weeks I got some black bags and stuck them all up in the loft. Drove me mad.

so unnecessary. they use them on sofas as well. i dont know what to do with them. fight with them to find some comfortable part to sit or lay down.

I’ve been there and done that many years ago, about ( 15 years ago to be honest ) and thought it was a waste of time. The fancy pillows looked great but were really uncomfortable and all ended up all over the fall and I couldn’t be bothered to put them on the bed again .
I had a interior designer back then which I thought was amazing, how wrong I was . 😫

Floor

I've got 2 'decorative' pillows on my bed. They go on the floor at night, and put back on the bed when I make the bed in the morning, it takes seconds.

avamiah · 17/07/2020 01:13

Shmithecat2,
I don’t think OP is talking about 2 pillows, more like half a dozen or more .

Shmithecat2 · 17/07/2020 01:15

@avamiah oh, like my DM then. Yeah, 6 or more is a bit of a pain. In 'my' room at her house, there were 6 on my bed. No need for that many.

VanGoghsDog · 17/07/2020 01:17

Drive me and in hotels, won't have them at home.

I have one decorative cushion in my bedroom, I put it on top of a basket about two years ago and I don't think it's ever gone back on the bed.

The spare bedrooms have two in the double and one in the single. But that wouldn't annoy anyone because noone ever uses those rooms.

avamiah · 17/07/2020 01:33

Shmithecat2,
Oh that’s so lovely that she does that for you .
I was talking about my bed in my house,I have 3 pillows on my bed( nothing fancy ).

ShebaShimmyShake · 17/07/2020 07:08

Thanks all. Yes, they can look so stylishly indulgent but I wonder if having to chuck them somewhere and rearrange them every morning would drive me mad.

Scatter cushions on the sofa are much the same for me. Look great, especially as part of the colour scheme, but leave no room to actually sit! So they're all over the floor when you're actually using the room.
