What to put in fireplace hole?

We have 2 rooms with a hole where the fireplace should be. It's just a cream dead space at moment (just moved in) but now sure what to put in each room.... any ideas or photos?

Church candles (move them out to light them if there is no chimney)
Hurricane lanterns
Fairy lights
Dried flowers
Stacked logs (NB spiders)

I have fake candles (real candles make me nervous) - these silver ones are remote controlled!
