Carpets - wool or man made?

First time carpet buyer here...

We are re-carpeting the whole house, I like the look of the more natural carpets and the berber and loop style ones. DH has agreed to these in the hallways but wants something softer on the foot for the living room and bedrooms.

I have a few samples. I don't like the 'sheen' on the 100% polyester ones we have samples for. I have Polypropylene one that I don't mind the look of but have no idea if it is durable?

Does anyone have any tips on what to look for / where to go? I want to do the whole house in a natural ish vibe but am worried if I go 100% wool i will constantly be cleaning them. We have 2 DCs aged 8 & 5 and two kittens...happy to have cheaper stuff in the kids/spare room also but then worry we will have 3 types of carpets in one house so maybe that will look odd?!

Definately do not have any type of berber carpet with animals as they will pull them to pieces. We had 100% wool right through the house and the last piece left is over 20 years old - it's had stuff spilled on it, cake rubbed in it from DD when she was a baby and all sorts of other stuff (including pet unmentionable stuff)!! It's cleaned up every time. We will be redoing the whole house next year, just before we retire and will probably have 100% wool again. Only things I would advise is it does fluff to start with so be prepared to get the vacuum out and make sure it's something you're sure you can live with colourwise - as it lasts a long time!

Wool all the way. We have this one and love it:

It's survived some spillages in DS's room (vomit and one or two wee accidents) as it cleans up nicely.

The cats scratch it a bit, but cats will be cats 🙄

We only have it upstairs and on the stairs - hard floors downstairs.

I've been researching carpets for a while and have finally made a decision.

You do not want Berber/loop style with cats as they can catch their claws in the loops and it pulls. It will look raggedy in no time.

While your children are young, I would put in Polypropylene carpets on heavily used areas and in their bedrooms. Cormar Primo Plus has a 10 year stain resistant warranty. It's perfect for stairs as it's a twist pile.

I'm having 80/20 wool on the stairs and in my bedroom and Primo Plus in the living room because of spills as I'm messy. You can order samples from Cormar and place them around the house where you tread, see how they feel underfoot.

Get a good, high density 11 mm underlay for the carpets. I'm getting Tredaire Dreamwalk.

Here is an interesting thing. I've had good quality wool carpets for 25 years and then last time I was persuaded to try polypropylene. I chose one for the whole ground floor with a short pile and in a very pale colour, and with a house full of teens. It's worked well 4 years so far, and quite easy to clean. Long pile flattens, I hear.
