Interior door handles can you paint them?

I have gold colour brass handles on all the doors and want to change them to silver.
Has anyone done this? Did it turn out well?
Can I paint them with a silver paint for metal?

I was only thinking about this earlier today so following with interest. I was wondering if I could buy a can of spray paint.

Spraying would be better

I have painted brass fixtures. I used Hammerite Special Metals Primer and then Hammerite for my top coat (want remember which now just remember the primer as that was important). You can't just use any old metals paint on brass.

Preparation and following the instructions would be everything.

Mine are exterior fixtures and standing up to the elements well a few years on. Don't know how it would go with something being handled frequently.

The trouble with painting things is then it requires maintenance. If you're ok with that then great.
