Open shelves or mesh drawers?

We have large fitted wardrobes in our bedroom, two of them have just a handling rail and lots of dead space at the bottom which is currently where shoes get dumped (along with other junk!) So looking to make some use out of the dead space but would open shelves be more use then pull out mesh drawers?
Am looking at either IKEA Platsa shelves or IKEA Jonaxel baskets.
Anyone else done something similar or found that shelves were useless and put drawers in or vice versa?

I think I would do shelves if you're planning to keep shoes there. Could you do half and half?

I had big wardrobes built in my daughters room that were basically a double with hanging tail and two shelves then a shallow single with about 4 shelves.

In the shallow single I have Ikea boxes - one for pj's, shoes etc then smaller tubs below for underwear etc. Although my wardrobe is a shop bought triple again it is just hanging rail and shelf and again I have just put tubs / boxes in for different bits.

It would probably be more for jumpers and Jeans, I could move them from the shelves in the walk in wardrobe and put shoes in there on the shelves because I could stack them 2 or 3 high.

Wire drawers. Clothes on shelves only look nice in shops or if you are naturally very tidy.
Having said that, I have Ikea folding boxes (skubb?) for things like bras , knickers, sock and tights, and that works, but the wire baskeys are great for things like t-shirts.

Drawers are best for such spaces. It stores more that you can keep in a shelf. Also, drawers gives a better look than shelf in such spaces.

I’d get ‘proper’ drawers rather than mesh ones. We had some wardrobes made with some wooden drawers & one mesh- the mesh one is annoying as clothes don’t sit nicely in them.

Drawers are better - you can actually see what’s at the back!

Be very careful with drawers in Pax units - there are certain positions that they won't fit in, because of the way the hinges protrude. I think it's the very bottom position. Only mesh baskets will fit there anyway. I'd definitely go for baskets rather than shelves, things will just get lost at the back of shelves.
