Interior designer?

We have knocked through our attached garage and original kitchen dining room and I designed it al. It works ok but I think the space could be better used possibly with removing the top half a wall ( which is a supporting wall) and rearranging the furniture. Also my taste is very safe and I'm a bit bored and uninspired

Has anyone used an interior designer to do something like this? Are they worth the money and roughly how much do they cost? Also do need an architect instead to advise on the wall?

I think you'll need a structural surveyor to advise on the wall.
My DH works with lots of interior designers, firstly you need to be sure that you like the sort of stuff they design. Over the years a few disastrous jobs have been because the interior designer and client weren't even in the same book let alone the same page. For example if you like minimalist this isn't the moment to choose someone like Nicky Haslem!. Also ensure that they know exactly what your budget is.
Over the years I've looked round lots of houses where clients have brought interior designers in, many are lovely but they often look like very exclusive boutique hotels lacking the personal touch that doing it yourself brings; the pleasure of choosing things yourself because you like them or they have meaning to you. As an alternative do you have a friend who's taste in interiors you like if yes why don't you ask her for some advise.
