Design a reading room

I have a home office/study that is never used and generally just full of random crap. I'd love to turn it into a reading room. Massive armchair etc, a sanctuary to retreat to and lose myself in a book. Any suggestions or ideas?

I am currently designing a book nook - had a thread on this the other day. If you put reading nook or book nook into Pinterest you’ll get loads of inspiration. I’m planning to have floor to ceiling bookshelves, possibly with cupboards at the bottom, and a built in daybed/window seat under the window.

Lovely idea. You'll need good light for the evenings, like a nice curved floor lamp?

I definitely want a big armchair and footstool... there was a Cadbury's advert years ago where the chair appeared to grow around the woman as she snuggled up with the chocolate and that's the image I have in my head....

Thanks for the responses

If it were me I'd want a small writing desk with lovely stationery for recording what I'd read, and responding to it, making notes etc.

Personally I'd also want to include space for technology. I read a lot of books on Kindle and use the internet for reference so I'd want space and charging facilities for devices, plus good WiFi as well as physical book space. Id have a nice book stand too.

You might want enclosed storage for cushions, blankets, fans to make the room fit all weathers. And a small amount of wall space for pictures if at all possible. You could have permanent art relating to reading, or temporary pictures, postcards, maps etc relating to the current book

Our builder this morning suggested lighting for the bookshelves, like this sort of thing. I think I prefer this to LED strip lighting or spots along the shelves.

I'd love a big wide windowsill or window seat with cushions if there's space for that.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/06/2020 12:12

I love the window seats but yonder how comfy they'd be after an hour or so.

I'd go armchair too, side table for snacks, wall to ceiling bookshelves with a ladder.

If you Ave a window seat, could you do a drop down deal do you could use it for writing if you wanted to buy wouldn't take up space

I would find the most comfy chair and build the room around it.

I gave away all my paper books when I moved house, any I do but I pass on or charity shop - I don't keep them so endless shelving not necessary. The room needs painting, and has a wooden floor so will need a rug and curtains. I like the idea of a painting on one wall that is reading related

A comfy chair, a biscuit table and decent lighting then and you're done. Maybe a foot rest which can double up as blanket storage

I have a M&S loveseat, which is like a XL armchair. I love it for reading in.

Chaise longue or day bed with cushions, comfortable armchair with footstool. Floor to ceiling bookcases with a ladder or library steps. Reading lamps. Occasional tables or a desk for writing, coffees etc. Lovely idea.

fluckityfluckfluck · 08/06/2020 13:21

I'm excited - cleared the room out this morning

Spineless Classics do posters of an entire novel on a page in a related design. There are lots of posters of classic first edition designs, and there's some gorgeous book art around.

I've got the Matilda one! My sister bought it for me years ago and I've never had the right spot for it

I can't imagine a 'reading room' without any books or bookshelves.

fluckityfluckfluck · 09/06/2020 09:21

Fair enough. I can.

Not sure what the delivery will cost you but figure you're saving a fortune in bookshelves 😂
