Carpet help!!

Ok. I have been floundering about the flooring for my bedroom. Carpet/Wood/Vinyl/ etc looking at all the different types, how easy it was to fit and how much etc etc Been at this months.

I've decided on carpet purely because of sound. There is a very thin partition wall between me and my neighbours and carpet with a good thick underlay is the best sound insulation choice.

My decision is made.

I then found some carpet I liked and was going to buy it and did a search on mumsnet and am now really confused, as it's apparently awful crap that's going to fall to pieces in three seconds.

It's half wool, half Polypropylene - I would have had 80/20 but was put off that idea so compromised.

The problem is, it's Berber/loop. I don't have cats so that's not a problem but it doesn't have a good reputation here.

Details:
Pile Height 5mm
Backing Action / Hessian
Material Wool
Pile Type Loop
Total Weight 1,560 gr/m²
Colour Shade Grey

It's very thin which is also a problem as it would be nice to have a comfy carpet but I can buy a nice rug by the bed. I just like the look of it and it goes with my walls and curtains etc. It's got a nice, modern look.

I was also looking at it to do the stairs as well.

Is this a bad choice?

What put you off the 80/20 Wool/poly mix? I’m only asking, because that’s what we have!

This place. Apparently it's Satan's choice. Moths. Can't clean it. It disintegrates in the light, fades etc

I then decided on 50/50 but then I read here that the 50/50 loop pile is awful as the wool disintegrates and leaves the synthetic fibre and it needs to be ripped up and replaced.

It's obviously a huge decision as it's so much kerfuffle clearing out rooms and getting the stuff laid and so expensive that I'm easily scared.

Interesting. We lived with cheap Nikon carpets, or no carpets for 8 years! Only got good carpets about 5 years ago. Like you said, it’s such a PITA that we got what was recommended as good carpets in a very neutral colour so we didn’t have to change them again for a very long time! Have had no problems yet!

I'm glad to hear that. I hope you and your carpets have a long and fruitful life. Maybe I just let scare stories affect me too much.

I had a moth infestation you see. My wool rugs, wool sofa, and cashmere got munched. Like a plague of locusts. So I was put off majority wool from that experience though half wool is probably a bad idea too thinking about it.

Had a long chat with someone yesterday who said that Polypropylene was a good choice but I don't know.

The moths in our house seam to head mostly for my jumpers!

I need to shamelessly bump this as the sale ends tomorrow! Any opinions on the carpet anyone?

We had Cormar Malabar loop pile carpet in our old house and will be getting it again in our new house as it still looked new when we moved having been in for about 3 years. We do see some clothes/carpet moths flying around in spring, but they don't seem to take hold/do any noticeable damage to clothes or to the existing carpets that are here. But the house is old, well ventilated (draughty) and we don't heat it to much above 19 degrees with central heating. Cormar Malabar is 100 per cent wool. But truth be told, moths will eat synthetic fibres too, so I'm going to go for a reasonably priced carpet that I like, keep an eye out for moths, and hope for the best. The only alternative is no carpet at all!

I've got Cormar berber style in my bedroom and its fine. Its not a high traffic area and if you're not going for the expensive stuff you may as well go cheap as it lasts just as well.

Thank you both!
