Painting the brickwork around the front door

Hi. I live in an ex council house. It's ordinary red brick and obviously all the houses on this street look the same.

By both sides of the front door are brick pillars and above the door is a little stone canopy thing sticking out that most people have painted white.

I have been looking at painting our front door a nice bright colour but the colours I like all look so much nicer surrounded by white.

I want to paint the pillars and the top bit with thick/smooth masonry paint so they form a frame around the door. In my head it will look lovely. I'll do all the necessary prep and buy good quality stuff.

My husband says no 'you don't paint brickwork' and I see why but it's not the whole house and I don't think it will put buyer off in the future if it look good will it?

What are your opinions?

Don't paint brickwork in good condition, on a street where others aren't painted.

Lots of door colours look lovely with brick.

Sad why?

Because once it's painted it's a pain to get off, but will get old (even quicker if it's domestically vs professionally done) and so it's a job they'll need to keep doing. Not everyone likes the look, and those who do will often prefer their own colour anyway, so again it's another job for them to go over it (or could put them off).

If it's your forever house and there are no restrictions within the estate on exterior painting, and you both like it then go for it, but honestly I wouldn't!
