Moving into a new house and really fancy a stair runner carpet - the current hall and stairs need replaced anyway.

However, was thinking originally a solid wood floor in the hallway as have 2 kids and our current hallway carpet is constantly filthy!

So if we do (solid oak) floor - how would we go about matching this on the stairs before fitting a runner? Anyone done this successfully? Or should I just fit a carpet on stairs and forget runner altogether! Thank you in advance.

We've got engineered oak flooring in the hall. The stairs are painted white and the runner is made from the same carpet as is on the landing.

If I'm really honest, if I had my time again I would probably just continue the carpet fully down the stairs. The exposed part at each side is an absolute dust and dirt trap and a nightmare to keep anything approaching clean. It's a real bone of contention in this house. DP hates it.

@Bluesheep8 - thanks so much that’s really useful to know. I hadn’t even thought about it being hard to keep clean - that’s definitely enough to make me rethink! Thanks a lot.

@Fivefootoffun I have something similar to Blue but don't find it hard to keep clean and that's with an indoor constantly moulting cat. I probably spend less that 10 mins every 5 days or so with a cordless vacuum. Mine's been down for 3.5 years and I'm really happy with it. Happy to post a picture in the morning if it would help.

Fivefootoffun · 25/05/2020 05:01

@TattiePants a picture would be great thank you. Is the vacuum more for hairs or do you fimd dust an issue too? Thanks a lot.

This is ours just after fitting, got stair rods now.

Same as other posters, we go up the sides with a handheld Dyson and give it a wipe with floorwipes.

The landing part matches the grey in the runner

I have wood both in my hall and my upstairs landing. Do people think it would look ok to put a runner on the stairs even though it's not joining into carpet?

Fivefootoffun · 25/05/2020 06:44

@Autumnchill thanks for this! Looks great!

I think it needs to join with carpet at the top, personally.

TattiePants · 25/05/2020 09:21

@Fivefootoffun I find the handheld hoover picks up any dust as well as cat hair. Then occasionally I run a damp cloth over as I’m hoovering.

If the top of the steps is not painted (original oak colour) it will be more forgiving with dust/pet hair 😉

Fivefootoffun · 25/05/2020 10:39

@TattiePants thanks that’s gorgeous, exactly what I’m after. Now to convince DH that he’d make a grand job of sanding down the stairs! Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

We've got wooden floors in the hall and landing with a stair runner between. Think it looks great. The sides of the runner does get dusty but its easy enough with a hand held vacuum.

Fivefootoffun · 06/06/2020 12:52

Thanks @Singinghollybob - I’ve just been looking at runners again today trying to decide. Is the base of your stairs just the same wooden floor or did you paint?

Thanks a lot, much appreciated

@Fivefootoffun the stair treads and risers are painted white including the bottom riser, is that what you mean? So it looks similar to this but our floor is a different colour

And the bannister is white

Fivefootoffun · 06/06/2020 15:48

@Singinghollybob ah perfect thanks - the white looks great. Need to just bite the bullet and go for it. Thanks a lot for the info, much appreciated.

@fivefootoffun you're welcome, I love the look of a stair runner. Hope you find something you like!
