Hang new wallpaper over old wallpaper

Has anyone ever done this? Did it work out okay?

Not looking forward to stripping the old wallpaper off and thought it might be a good shortcut.

Yes....but you may want to hang lining paper horizontally first, if it's got vinyl paper on it currently. Normal paper won't stick to vinyl paper effectively.
Also, it will only really work if there is absolutely no damp or condensation in your house.

If you can get access to a steamer it should come off ok. But then if you dont know what the walls are like theres a chance they might need skimming (been there!)

Only if the old paper is just paper, with no surface treatment or texture and is in perfect condition as any tears or lifting will just transfer onto the new paper. Also, at the very least, make sure that you stagger the seams.

It's not really a shortcut; it's just doing a half assed job. Strip the walls.

Half assed job doesn't worry me too much, the house needs refurbishment so will probably be redone within a year or so. Quick is what we need atm.

I'm not sure how to tell if it's vinyl paper, it just looks like normal wallpaper to me. Is vinyl paper the type that's used in bathrooms and kitchens?

It can be done but be prepared for the old paper to bubble underneath. I'd try one strip and see how it works out.

We have old lining paper on all of our walls which has then been painted over and then in places also been wallpapered over. In principle wallpaper over wallpaper is the same thing as wallpaper over lining paper (our lining paper is vertically hung not horizontally).

Urgh- no. It’s a pet hate of mine. Especially when the previous owners have layered 7 wallpapers up.

I wouldn't even paper then. I would strip and paint. Even if the walls are not perfect, it's only temporary.
