Afternoon all,

We have bought a new house and there is perfect space in each bedroom for fitted wardrobes. My understanding is that these usually cost more than unicorn tears so so you clever MNers have any savvy ways of cutting the cost?

Gliderobes! I’m not a sales rep for them but I bloody should get commission, I’ll recommend them to anyone who’ll listen 😂 I’m a big fan. You measure it up (roughly) yourself, online quote generator, samples through the post, then the fitter comes and does proper measurements and fits it once it’s sent out... I paid literally a third of what Sharps etc and a local carpenter quoted me, and am very happy with the finished product.

I would go to a local carpenter for quotes, or a small independent company rather than somewhere like sharps, they charge a fortune.

Fitted wardrobes is my big regret in this house. I really dislike the lack of flexibility I’ve ended up with.

If you intend living in your house a long time, and your rooms might change function, ie go from kid’s room to young adult’s to guest room/office, then your fitted furniture is likely to outlive it’s usefulness, to say nothing of its stylishness. I think you are better going for Ikea.

@Goostacean thanks I shall take a look!

@TinklyLittleLaugh I know what you mean but these will always be rooms with beds in and the spaces are quite specifically for wardrobe space. I'm a big fan of quite classic shaker style things and I like things I can paint. They will blend in neutrally with the rooms rather than being a feature. Hopefully won't be a design car crash in 20 years!!

I went with a local company. It was much cheaper than the big names and they did a great job. I love it.

We bought Ikea Pax built in wardrobes and had a joiner box them in with plasterboard, then paint. He didn’t believe us that it would look ok when we asked him to do it, but he was amazed how well they turned out.

They look exactly like fitted wardrobes but cost only £1500 for 3.5m of wardrobe.
