Hi I've just written and lost a post so if it shows up you have to excuse me! I've not long moved into this house and I am a foster carer waiting to have a child aged 0-10 years placed. The room has white walls and white furniture and built in cupboards with wooden doors. It's a really bright room so I do need blackout curtains. I will put up pictures etc when they arrive so I know who it's for but I need some unisex curtains and the width is weird because it is two windows together. I will put up a picture to show you what i mean! Hope I don't lose this post as well!

I'd leave the curtains and pop a couple of blackout blinds into the window recesses. You can get cordless ones for safety as you don't know the age of any children. With curtains you will always get the light coming underneath and around but with blinds and curtains you shouldn't.

I can't see a picture, OP.

It's funny I can see the photos on my phone but not my laptop

I'm not very handy to put blinds up myself also the pattern on the curtains is teddy bears which is fine for babies and toddlers but for an older child it wont be

There are loads of blackout blinds in IKEA for quite a good price, then you could get cheaper curtains?

Or you could get blackout curtains from somewhere like Dunelm?

WithIcePlease · 13/05/2020 17:30

I have white or cream roller blinds inset near windows in bedrooms and can hardly be seen when rolled up

DrinkingInTheNightGarden · 13/05/2020 17:37

Yes defo go the blinds, we just got black out curtains and realised you need blinds to really get it to work! Then keep your curtains too.

Blinds2Go are fab!

MotherofKitties · 13/05/2020 17:38

Get blinds and keep the curtains. Apart from anything a decent blackout blind is so much more effective than blackout curtains ever will be

We have blackout blinds in our room and blackout curtains for dd. Ours let light in around the sides and hers let light in at the top and bottom! I'm going to get her blackout blinds, in addition to her blackout curtains because she refuses to believe dawn is not an appropriate time to get up!

Argos have some very reasonably priced blackout blinds. My NDN recommended this portable one to me, you may need two for your windows though www.argos.co.uk/product/9209462?clickSR=slp:term:blackout%20blind:2:32:1

I have IKEA blackout curtains (majgull). In another room I have their blackout roller blinds (discodans). The curtains completely black out the room. They are amazing. The blinds let the light through the sides because they have to go within the recess. And so are actually slightly smaller than the gap.

tenlittlecygnets · 13/05/2020 18:22

Dunelm has v good and cheap blackout curtains. Just measure your windows and buy curtains that are 1.5 x the width of the window.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 13/05/2020 19:12

Thanks everyone. I've ordered some blackout blinds now but I do need to change the curtains in case an older child comes. I can't find any that would fit the window. I don't want them to reach the floor and the measurements are: width 183cm (so I need about just under 300cm) and 160cm drop. I'm in Scotland so I don't think anywhere would be open to alter the curtains.
