Which room would you put the nursery

Hi all,

I hope you are all doing well.

My partner and I will be shortly completing on our first home! We are so excited and can't wait to move in and decorate. It is a maisonette on the top 2 floors of a Victorian terrace house with the top floor being what would have been the attic. We are so lucky to have found somewhere with 2 big double bedrooms as where we live it was quite a challenge to find somewhere where the second bedroom wasn't really tiny. we'd definitely like to live here a little while whilst we expand our family. We are hoping to have 2 little ones in the future if we are able to.

The only issue though unfortunately is the main bedroom is on the top floor where the bathroom is. And the second bedroom is downstairs right next to the small hall and front door, with the living room/kitchen next door. They'd be no way of changing this around unfortunately to have the second bedroom moved upstairs and the bathroom downstairs instead.

I just wanted to ask your opinions on how to decide which bedroom will be mine and my partner's and which one will be eventually for our little ones. We haven't got children yet but hope to soon. When we have a little one I know that for the first few months at very least they'll be staying in our bedroom, but when they are ready to sleep in their in bedroom which one would you think is best? The upstairs bedroom (we'd definitely have a stair gates either way) or the downstairs bedroom (we'll make sure the front door locks properly with maybe a bolt for added security out of a child's reach so when a little one is walking theily can't accidentally open the front door.)

We'd ideally like to start a bit of decorating as soon as we move in but still undecided on what's the safest option. I know it can all be moved around as things change and as they get older etc. Just we want to start making our fitted features like a fitted wardrobe in the main bedroom in the attic to utilise the space and a bespoke bedhead with storage room so some bits won't be movable into other rooms.

Just how big are the bedrooms and what's your appetite/budget for doing work? Could you squeeze an ensuite into the one on the lower floor, or fit one under the stairs etc? Or more radically, if the attic bedroom and bathroom are very large, flip the maisonette upside down and have your kitchen-living space up top (there's already plumbing up there from the bathroom which should help) and then have both bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs.
