Well the lockdown has been useful in the respect that DP has now revamped our lounge at last :)

Can anyone please help me choose some curtains, I don't want to block the light out and if the poles weren't up (it's a lounge diner) I would have gone without curtains. I am struggling to choose a colour and style.

We also need a wall clock to hang on the left in an alcove, no more than 50cm and also some pictures or wall art to go behind the sofa.
I would be very grateful for any help at all please!

I think a clock, wall art and curtains may all look a little cluttered.

Personally I would go for plain curtains in the denim colour you have in the pattern of the settee.

It looks a lovely room 😊

LaureBerthaud · 08/04/2020 10:00

No ideas (sorry!) but it looks good!

What's your flooring?

2020changedtheworld · 08/04/2020 10:00

I would have cream or white blackout curtains. Dunelm have nice ones.

Can you wallop that corner bit of laminate/wood down for me Grin

runningwoman1980s · 08/04/2020 10:03

Soft furnishings. Curtains and a rug will make a massive difference.

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 08/04/2020 10:05

I'd go to IKEA for curtains. They have plenty in the same shade as your lamp. Keep them pale and neutral.

carnivalisover · 08/04/2020 10:06

I think you need a close pile light beige rug, to pull everything together. I’d have shutters but if you insist on curtains, have these in a plain, light shade too. Finally....I’d have painted the wooden fire surround; there just seems a lot of golden oak.

Bluesheep8 · 08/04/2020 10:08

I'd go for the blue of your sofa and chair for your curtains op. In quite a sheer material.

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 08/04/2020 10:08

Just looking at your window OP and there's a radiator underneath so long curtains would be out. I'd probably leave it rather than have short, unless you need them for warmth.

Bluesheep8 · 08/04/2020 10:09

And I second pairing the fire surround white. Just my opinion

Aethelthryth · 08/04/2020 10:09

Plain curtains in the blue from the sofa. A rug. Pictures as and when you find things that you like-don't rush into it. Forget the clock

Floralnomad · 08/04/2020 10:10

I’d get a rug before I worried about putting anything on the walls , it looks lovely btw . Julian Charles do nice curtains and very reasonable .

Bluesheep8 · 08/04/2020 10:10

Or have dress curtains that don't actually close as you have a blind.

AmelieTaylor · 08/04/2020 10:17

You could take the pole down.

Or just get some full length dress curtains that don't close, so there's no bulk of fabric

I wouldn't put up anything else -I like a minimal look. I'd remove the bits on the window sill (and the hearth) but I know mist people like more stuff around than I do.

Cantdecidewhich · 08/04/2020 10:19

Thanks for all the replies, I hadn't thought of a rug can anyone put some pictures of some on for me please as I have never bought one before.
I will definitely look at Julian Charles for curtains I hadn't considered denim blue will they make the room dark though?
DP would never paint his precious fireplace he is very traditional and hates change, it's taken me 4 years to persuade him to do this :) :) !!
I have to buy a clock it's driving me mad not having one up at the moment.

Definitely a rug
Sheer, floaty curtains that stay open - probably just white or cream
Definitely some pictures - it's a pretty room but it needs some personality

Cantdecidewhich · 08/04/2020 10:23

@AmelieTaylor I like lots of things around I wish I had more shelves etc to put my clutter :)

Why can't I have long curtains with the radiator, I didn't know it made a difference?

Nice room, how about putting a fabric covered pelmet up high on the wall header (where pole is ) in the denim blue, this will draw the eye up. keep the blinds if you must, i would have put false floor length curtains up. (ie. curtains that dont pull across). To just cover the sides of the window, arrange them so that they are the same width pulled back to disguise the fact that the walls either side of window are not the same width.

JillyWillyPops · 08/04/2020 10:29

I would take the curtain pole down, fill the holes and paint over. It looks lovely and fresh and light with curtains.

JillyWillyPops · 08/04/2020 10:30

*without curtains

Cantdecidewhich · 08/04/2020 10:30

@Thesuzle where do you get the false curtains from or do you just buy the narrowest width that is available for your window?

Astillbe · 08/04/2020 10:32

I'd go for floor length curtains in a neutral colour, like in the pic attached. Definitely not short curtains, that would look awful and dated. You have blinds so you don't need to close them anyway.

I also think a rug will look nice and would break up the amount of wood colour, maybe something neutral but with texture like this John Lewis one, Dunelm also usually have nice ones.

I'd then just get whichever clock you like and put either one large or two framed prints above the sofa.

Re the false curtains, yes you could just get the smallest width but personally I'd get full length in the correct width. If the curtains are lightweight they won't block that much heat anyway, in summer it won't matter and in the winter you could just close the blinds and leave them open.

If you get a rug get one large enough so that it goes under the sofa and chair, not a small one that just fits under the coffee table. As you have a patterned sofa I'd stick to neutral tones for the curtains and rug, like the background colour of the sofa.

Notwiththeseknees · 08/04/2020 10:42

What Thuzle said. But run the pelmet/pole from corner to corner. You could have long curtains if you wish - I would have curtains the same colour as the walls as it is a (relatively) small room and dark curtains or strongly patterned ones will make the room feel smaller.

If you want a bit of clutter around (love it me) then a very narrow ledge behind the sofa - painted to match the wall with pictures or plates leant in it. If you like blue& white china, then an arrangement (including some mirrors) could add interest.

Plain old seagrass/jute/sisal rug bound in blue edging for the floor. Blue & white/putty accessories on the table.

The alternative could be roman blinds, oversize and in a very neutral strip/self strip/plain. That won't interfere with the radiatior if you need the heat but want the added insulation.

I had a mix up with my curtain maker (DP was involved). Not even dreaming she would make me short curtains because of the radiator, she did. As she was hanging them, I nearly cried. One week later, they were rehung in the study where the two windows are identical thank god, I asked her to make blinds for the sitting room. Which actually look okay.

Thanks for the pics @Astillbe, I like the Dunelm curtains, someone else mentioned sheer curtains and I am wondering if they would look better as they will be soft and floaty. We never close our downstairs curtains anyway just the blinds so will definitely go full length.
As mentioned by a couple of PP we could just do away with the poles and go without altogether. This is so hard :)

Full length curtains but they don’t ever need to be closed, just for framing.

A rug!
