Help finishing off my new lounge please - pic included

Well the lockdown has been useful in the respect that DP has now revamped our lounge at last :)

Can anyone please help me choose some curtains, I don't want to block the light out and if the poles weren't up (it's a lounge diner) I would have gone without curtains. I am struggling to choose a colour and style.

We also need a wall clock to hang on the left in an alcove, no more than 50cm and also some pictures or wall art to go behind the sofa.
I would be very grateful for any help at all please!

Yes to soft, sheer curtains.

Mumsie43 · 08/04/2020 10:50

I would change the curtain rail to sit out to the whole width of the wall of the same colour as the wall, curtains in a cream or white colour floor length.
A nice large wool rug., once you start looking you will find a match.
A wall shelves behind the arm chair for your ornaments
I love the style of your couches & feet on them.

I've got curtains I never pull as they don't even meet in the middle. Just there for effect but they don't stop the light. So full length but the shortest width available.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 08/04/2020 10:55

Demin blue curtains would make the room darker.
I would go for light unlined or sheer white curtains. Keep it airy.
Wayfair do really nice minimal oak clocks

covidcougher · 08/04/2020 10:58

If you want curtains just buy a pair for show that don't actually close. I'd go for the blue in your settee. Once you've got curtains check wether you want a clock and pictures. Perhaps a mirror above the settee will add more light?

Qgardens · 08/04/2020 10:59

Change the picture above the masterpiece for one of the massive clocks that are around. You don't want too much on the walls.

Qgardens · 08/04/2020 10:59

Mantel piece

covidcougher · 08/04/2020 10:59

Ignore mirror comment sorry noticed one on wall!

Qgardens · 08/04/2020 11:00

Yes to the huge rectangular mirror above the sofa.

StrugglingThrough2 · 08/04/2020 11:03

Voile curtains from ikea, cheap, light and will frame the window.

Cantdecidewhich · 08/04/2020 11:06

There is a mirror over the mantelpiece so we can't have another behind the sofa.
I think our current poles extend so may be an option to widen them out as suggested, I will ask DP if they will stretch enough.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far it has really got me re-thinking things which is exactly what I needed. Any more ideas would be really welcome.

I'd. go for some floor length voile curtains just to soften the sharp window edges. You don't really need heavy curtains with the blinds.

@Topshelf where are they from please?

I love Weavergreen rugs. I've got one and they are fabulous. I think this one would look great in your room: www.weavergreen.com/collections/rugs/products/navy-provence-rug

I think the room could really benefit from some bold colour. I don't know what type of art you like, but something naive like this, which picks up on the blue but introduces bright other colours would look nice. www.art2arts.co.uk/artwork/two-pears

I'd either get one large picture or a number of different sized ones. Like this, but with colour! i.pinimg.com/originals/92/c8/35/92c835a3547e637bc0a1fcca69255d3e.png

Given that you've got blue and cream, I'd make yellow my accent colour. Think about how you can pick things up in yellow and blue throughout the room (daffodils, a blue candle, a yellow picture frame, etc.) Here's a nice example: www.addicted2decorating.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/neutral-living-room-with-yellow-accents-by-jennifer-brouwer-design.jpg

Rockbird · 08/04/2020 11:24

I'd take the pole down and fill the holes. I like the blinds and it gives the windows a nice clear look.

And please don't paint the surround. One of our decorators did by mistake and although I tried to strip it it never looked the same and we ended up painting over it again. Biggest mistake of my gone decor life! I hate it.

Cantdecidewhich · 08/04/2020 11:26

@forkfun thanks for the links they are brilliant ideas! I especially like the rug and the shelf with pictures behind the sofa. I may buy some daffodils next time I venture to the supermarket so I can try the yellow :)

@Rockbird my DP would never paint the surround, shame what happened with yours though.

Yes, extend the curtain pole and then the curtains can frame the window, not blocking any light. Go for a thinner material so they don’t bulk up as much

tulipsrus · 08/04/2020 11:31

I have these, material from Dunhelm
Blue won’t make it dark

Sorry but that picture is (imho) horrible. Don't buy pictures to match a room; buy them because you love them!

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 14:10

@Notwiththeseknees where is your stripy cushion from pls?

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/04/2020 18:35

I'd suggest blue curtains with a highlight colour such as a yellow. Otherwise it could look a bit samey.
I remember watching an interior design show on TV and the designer said that the main colour should be about 60%, the secondary colour about 30% and the highlight colour about 10% of the entire colour scheme.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/04/2020 18:41

If you do go for curtains (rather than voile), then extend the pole the width of the room so the curtains hang in front of the walls rather than the glass. Then you still get maximum light.

I love your sofa.
