Red carpets

We are in the middle of purchasing (great timing) a house with new bright red carpets upstairs.

What colours go with bright red?

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I couldn't live with bright red carpeting. I would rip it out.

Bright red will show every bit of fluff and stray cotton.
Tempted to say grey but that’s over done. Dark beige I guess

Grey, although you'd probably have to be careful not to look very 1980s
Green, would probably tone the whole thing down a bit

If you are stuck with something that's not to your taste, you can nearly always find a way to work around it until you are able to change it. I've seen people in magazines do amazing things with avocado or bright yellow bathrooms suites for example.

Nothing! Can you not just rip out? I'd rather be carpetless than live with red.

Perhaps you could host the oscars next year?

Lots of white or neutral. Red tartan throw cushions to coordinate.

I was once in a house with 1m wide diagonal stripes of red and white paint on the walls with colour coordinated radiator paint to match.

They had lots of wood on the floors. It was very 1970s. Sunglasses required!

I'd have to rip it all out. Sorry.

Unfortunately getting rid isn't an option at the moment. They are brand new and we need to save the cash to spend on more urgent items.

The house ticks a lot of boxes for us, apart from these carpets.

I think we will have to go down the neutral route.

OK, how about one of f and b's red based neutrals? Like Dimity?

I never knew there was such a thing.

There is tons which goes with red. Absolutely loads. I have a large red rug downstairs. Currently it is with Fand B clunch, and has previously been teamed with magnolia, pale blue, barley white, white, pale pink, grey-brown. Honestly, there are heaps of options. Also a strategically places rug plus a bed means that it'll be more of a highlight than the main colour.

So look at F and B reds, check what colours they are teamed with. Or look on Pinterest.

Lidl and aldi often do large ivory/cream rugs very very cheap. I would cover them with the rugs. I would do timeless or a very pale grey white on the walls to tone what's left down.

Sorry OP but unless you need a new roof I'm struggling to think of anything more urgent than getting rid of red carpets .

If you need to live with them then I'd keep everything else as neutral as possible (maybe tie them in with some neutral cushions with a red pattern which would be fairly cheap to do - making cushion covers is easy) and buy a large rug to cover as much as you can.

The benefit to that is when you can replace them you have neutral base so you start again with any colour palette you like for walls/carpet and pull it all together with coordinating soft furnishings.
