Painting engineering wooden floors?

Hi, I have engineered wooden floor all in the ground floor of my house . It was there when we moved years ago, it probably has been there 15 years and looks quite tired is a light maple wood.
I was trying to think of ways on a budget to make it look better, anyone tried painting floors? Other ideas?
Thanks!

I'm considering exactly this. I'm going to do a few test patches with tinted oil first (which may not be very successful as maple is apparently difficult to tint), and if I don't like the results, we're going to paint.

I love painted floors, my Pinterest is full of them.

You can sand engineered wood - depending on depth of wood veneer.

No specific ones, just search 'painted wooden floors' and there are lots of ideas. I'm considering chequerboard (although it's a bit daunting!).

Our floor is also about 15 years old, and is in a bad state. I suspect the tinted oil won't quite be up to the task.
