What can I do to make this god awful bathroom better?

We are renting a property, plan to be here a couple of years, the landlords nice, said we can decorate how ever we can, do what we like but if we're to pain walls black to put them to more a more neutral colour when we leave. So we've decorated the rooms because they where really badly done when we first moved.

However the bathroom is horrible, it's covered in this weird plastic glittery tile, is there anything we can buy to cover it? It really ruins the rest of the house

Oh gosh...🤭
Then I would consider to repaint it really.

SpeedofaSloth · 17/01/2020 21:29

I quite like it.

AnneKipanki · 17/01/2020 21:33

Are you allowed to do anything to it ?

Accessories.
Plants .

milkysmum · 17/01/2020 21:33

I think you'll make it look worse trying to paint over it. It's not awful, might not be to your particular taste but honestly it's not bad at all considering what's in a lot of rental properties.

CatUnderTheStairs · 17/01/2020 21:37

It’s fine, it looks clean, embrace the quirkiness and accessorise instead, save your money...

CassidyStone · 17/01/2020 21:37

I wouldn't do anything to the black glittery tiles, hideous though they are. I'd get some brightly coloured bathroom accessories, bath mat, toothmug, soap dish, towels etc and a few nice leafy plants. You'll get used to the tiles eventually and won't flinch in disgust every time you see them.

In our first rented flat, we had an avocado bathroom suite with matching avocado tiles and a dark green carpet. It was a tiny room too, about 6ft x 5ft. Now that was truly disgusting, like bathing in a bowl of snot.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 17/01/2020 21:38

It’s a dream compared to mine

picklemepopcorn · 17/01/2020 21:42

The walls aren't really the problem- it's just too busy with lines and reflections.
Get a much plainer floor down, take out anything unnecessary.
Sort out that grim filler around the sink pedestal.
Fill that ledge with plants to hide it.
Do you have to keep the screen? It's the vertical reflections and the shower through it which are making my head ache.

BayandBlonde · 17/01/2020 21:42

The panelling is similar to a patterned product called Whiterock. It's common in hospital wetrooms and other wet areas.

It's not cheap either and you can't paint it.

I would give the bathroom a good clean, whiten the grout etc, that will make it better. I guess accessories is all you can do

CoatTails · 17/01/2020 21:42

I love it!!

SayitBeit · 17/01/2020 21:43

I wouldnt waste my time or money on it. You probably spend 5% of your week in there.

Save your pennies.

I like you bathroom,it looks shiny, clean and fresh looking. My bathroom is nothing like that. I live in a small terrace cottage, which is about 150 years old, I have attempted to do it up for a few years,at the least expense. I have made it into a cosy type bathroom. I have three biggish mirrors in there, to reflect some light from the stupid tiny old window. I have put up some pine shelves around the bath,to accommodate all the usual bath stuff etc. Then I have several green exotic house plants, two on two corners of the bath, two in hanging baskets, and one larger free standing one on the floor.

Then to finish off, I bought three lovely pictures on line, they are all of different types of parrots (bird lover me) so I now call the bathroom,my tropical paradise ha ha.

I also found a lovely old sheeny cream tablecloth in my attic, so I made it into some curtains for the crappy old window.

Okay I'm too involved I know- but get some ideas.
I think the room need to warming up a little.

Keep your eyes shut as much as possible - in the bath , cleaning teeth and on the loo :) Luckily you don’t spend too much time in there relatively .

lonelyonee · 18/01/2020 08:07

OP that's a lovely bathroom. If you saw mine you'd probably have a melt down it's that bad 😂

FinallyHere · 18/01/2020 08:13

While the colour is not really to my taste, I would notice the lack of shelf space around the basin much more acutely. I could ignore the colour but feel I would be inconvenienced by nowhere to put anything down every time I used it.

Also I really doubt the landlord would think you had the bathroom in mind, when he said you can decorate.

I expect he meant just painting walls.Halo

pineing · 18/01/2020 11:18

I'd leave well alone. If you do something to that, it could cost you a fortune to put right to the landlord's satisfaction.

LesLavandes · 18/01/2020 11:24

Looks ok in a rented property

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 18/01/2020 11:28

I dont think its too bad but I would have to replace the shower door seal on the bath edge

AuntieDolly · 18/01/2020 11:28

I've got a similar layout in my bathroom. What do you have in front of the window?

Lindy2 · 18/01/2020 11:40

I think it looks fine. The landlord has put a hard wearing and practical wall covering on that is completely water tight. It's clean and the colour scheme looks perfectly ok to me.

I very much doubt that when he said you could paint walls that he meant you could alter the bathroom.

Any tile paint is likely to look pretty rubbish and you will have changed a maintenance free surface into one that is likely to peel and need regular repainting. It would also be impossible for you to put back to its original state once painted or covered in stickers.

I'm a landlord and I would not be at all happy if you altered this type of bathroom covering. That type of alteration is very, very different from a fresh coat of emulsion on a bedroom wall.

If you want any chance of getting your deposit back (plus not potentially also being hit with a repair bill) leave it alone, or at least discuss and get specific permission from your landlord to change it.

@LuisaKelmen those images of bold and stylish high-end bathrooms are light years away from OPs reality Grin
